Debris, landslides, and collapsed structures blocking key routes has made getting to survivors extremely difficult. “Many roads are blocked, forcing assessment teams to walk for four to five hours to reach survivors,” said Graham Davison, CARE Afghanistan Country Director. The assessment teams were forced to abandon their vehicles and navigate rough mountain terrain on foot to reach remote communities. Phone signals are poor, making coordination difficult.

Despite compounded factors such as insecurity and fear of reprisals, the women and girls who manage to reach health facilities after sexual violence face another challenge, as post-exposure prophylaxis (PEP) kits are now not available. Due to funding cuts, the entire procurement chain that once supplied PEP kits to humanitarian actors in the DRC has collapsed, leaving critical gaps.

Women farmers lose out too often to men—and often face more gender-based violence as a result.

- [SMILES – Somalia](https://care.ca/projects/smiles-somalia/): In Somalia, the availability and quality of midwifery services face significant gaps, which undermines efforts to reduce maternal and newborn mortality. These challenges are most pronounced in rural and underserved areas, where women and adolescent girls often face limited access to essential sexual and reproductive health (SRH) services and are unable to fully exercise their rights. Marginalized populations, including ethnic minorities, internally displaced persons, women with disabilities, and girls at risk of early marriage or unintended pregnancy encounter further barriers to care, making existing health inequities worse.

- [Middle East Emergency](https://care.ca/projects/middle-east-emergency/): Conflict in the Middle East has put millions of people’s health, safety and source of income at risk.
- [Multisector Humanitarian Response to Hurricane Melissa in Cuba and Jamaica](https://care.ca/projects/multisector-response-hurricane-melissa-cuba-jamaica/): Hurricane Melissa hit Jamaica and Cuba at the end of October 2025 and caused massive damage. In Jamaica, whole communities lost their homes, water systems, power and crops. In Cuba, the storm destroyed houses, roads, farms and water supplies, especially in the province of Guantánamo. Many families were already struggling because a storm the year before had also damaged homes and crops.
- [WEECAP – Côte d’Ivoire, Senegal, Guinea-Bissau](https://care.ca/projects/weecap-cote-divoire-senegal-guinea-bissau/): In West Africa, cashew nuts are an important crop for many farmers. Countries like Côte d’Ivoire, Guinea-Bissau and Senegal produce large amounts of raw cashew nuts, but most of them are exported without being processed locally. This means that the chance to create jobs and higher incomes through cashew processing is lost.
- [CapSanté – Benin](https://care.ca/projects/cap-sante-benin/): The project is led by a consortium of the Université de Montréal’s International Health Unit (USI) and CARE. Together with the Ministry of Health in Benin, we are working to make health services in the north of the country stronger, fairer and closer to the people who need them most.

The project is located in the West and East Haraghe zones of the Oromia and Afar regions of Ethiopia, where the adolescent population is hard to reach and has limited access to essential services. - [SERVE – Rwanda](https://care.ca/projects/serve-rwanda/): Supporting and Enhancing Resilient and Viable Employment Opportunities (SERVE) is a program under the Mastercard Foundation Young Africa Works strategy which aims to build a resilient, sustainable, gender equitable and inclusive entrepreneurial environment that increases dignified and fulfilling work opportunities for young people in agricultural value chains across Rwanda. SERVE is implemented through a consortium of partners led by CARE, and which is composed of Duharanire Amajyambere Y'Icyaro (DUHAMIC-ADRI), ProFemme Twese Hamwe (PFTH), Association of Micro-Finance Institutions Rwanda (AMIR), and Urwego Bank.
- [Crisis in East Africa](https://care.ca/projects/crisis-in-east-africa/): The combination of conflict, climate change and widespread hunger is causing an unprecedented humanitarian crisis in East Africa.
- [Earthquake in Türkiye and Syria](https://care.ca/projects/earthquake-in-turkiye-and-syria/): The deadly earthquake that struck south-central Türkiye and northwest Syria have killed more than 50,000 people and injured tens of thousands more. In the hardest-hit provinces in across Türkiye and northwest Syria, 17.9 million people were affected, 2.7 million people have been displaced and 1.9 million people are living in temporary shelters. Hundreds of thousands of buildings have collapsed or are heavily damaged.
- [Pakistan floods](https://care.ca/projects/pakistan-floods/): Catastrophic flooding in Pakistan has affected more than 33 million people. The floods have created a humanitarian crisis, with more than 1300 people killed and more being reported, as well as widespread destruction of homes, roads, schools, health facilities and other critical infrastructure and loss of livestock.
- [Lifesaving Health, WASH, and Protection in Tigray, Ethiopia](https://care.ca/projects/lifesaving-health-wash-and-protection-in-tigray-ethiopia/): Humanitarian conditions continue to deteriorate across Ethiopia, with 23.5 million people requiring life-saving assistance in the first quarter of 2021. The conflict in Tigray began in November 2020, and a State of Emergency was declared on  November 4, 2021, exactly one  year later. Humanitarian needs in the Tigray region are extremely dire, with 5.2 million (90%) of its six million people requiring urgent assistance.
- [GROWING – Ghana](https://care.ca/projects/growing-generating-revenues-for-improved-nutrition-in-northern-ghana/): Funded by the Government of Canada and led by our partner The International Potato Center (CIP), the GROWING project will use an approach that integrates agriculture, nutrition, and marketing for maximum impact.
- [Global Hunger Crisis](https://care.ca/projects/global-hunger-crisis/): The ongoing conflict in Ukraine and the resulting disruption of food, fuel, and fertilizer markets has exacerbated an existing hunger crisis. This is particularly dire in contexts already experiencing humanitarian crises: Somalia, Ethiopia, South Sudan, Yemen, and other nations where access to nutritious and abundant food supply has long been taken for granted, like Morocco, Honduras, and Cuba.
- [AWEEV – Vietnam](https://care.ca/projects/aweev-advancing-womens-economic-empowerment-in-vietnam/): Funded by the Government of Canada, AWEEV ultimately seeks to partner with local civil society organizations to contribute to the increased economic wellbeing of rural and ethnic minority women in Vietnam by:
- [FANMKAD – Haiti](https://care.ca/projects/fanmkad-women-and-girls-standing-up-with-dignity-for-our-sexual-and-reproductive-rights/): CARE, Santé Monde, and Lawyers Without Borders Canada, with funding from the Government of Canada, will contribute, through the FANMKAD project, to reducing existing gender gaps that are keeping women and adolescent girls from accessing sexual and reproductive health services. FANMKAD's key activities include health provider training, advocacy work, and support for legal and civil society organizations in Haiti-offering psycho-social support and legal services to women and adolescent girls while responding to their needs.
- [START4Girls – Zimbabwe](https://care.ca/projects/supporting-transition-retention-and-training-for-girls-start4girls/): The START4GIRLS program addresses barriers that affect girls' access to secondary education and/or training opportunities which could impact on their future as successful adults and their ability to be financial independent. Girls' access to and continued attendance of secondary education becomes especially fragile in times of escalated crisis. Parents may prioritize education expenses for boys, with girls more likely to be withdrawn from school, either to help support their family or for early marriage. Increase in early marriage rates and transactional sex as a coping mechanism in response to lack of food and economic insecurity further  prevent adolescent girls and young women from continuing their education.
- [Ukraine Crisis](https://care.ca/projects/ukraine-crisis-response/): In the weeks after the onset of conflict in Ukraine in February 2022, the country’s humanitarian situation surpassed even the direst predictions. Neighbouring countries are seeing huge refugee influxes, largely women and children. 
- [SHE SOARS – Kenya, Uganda, Zambia](https://care.ca/projects/she-soars/): SHE SOARS is working alongside health care providers and key stakeholders in the target communities to provide evidence-based sexual and reproductive health information, address root causes of gender-based inequalities, improve health services, and work with young people, particularly girls, to increase decision-making about their lives and their bodies.

- [Coronavirus COVID-19](https://care.ca/projects/coronavirus-covid-19/): The coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic affects us all. It will have unthinkable consequences in the places CARE is already delivering lifesaving aid-places where health care systems are already weak, and where disaster and conflict have wiped out long-term food supplies. In these communities, there are far too many vulnerable people and too few resources to fight a deadly virus like COVID-19.

The tools are simple and they work.
- [South Sudan humanitarian crisis](https://care.ca/projects/south-sudan-humanitarian-crisis/): South Sudan is facing the most challenging period since it gained independence in 2011, with a converging set of crises including food insecurity, disease outbreaks, devastating floods, lack of health systems, armed conflict, and economic collapse. More than half of the population is facing severe food insecurity.
- [Syria crisis](https://care.ca/projects/syria-crisis/): Since the conflict in Syria began in 2011, hundreds of thousands of people have died, and millions have been forced to flee their homes. Today, more than 13 million—over half the country’s population—are displaced, either inside or outside Syria. More than half of them are children. Thousands remain missing.
