  We all have different hair types. While they can be simply categorized into four types, according to the ‘Andre Walker Hair Typing System’, there are actually ten types. This difference arises because the shape of each person’s hair follicle varies. Since the shape of the hair follicle, the organ that produces hair, differs from person to person, the direction and shape in which hair grows also change. You can clearly see this by zooming in on the cross-section of the hair. • Straight hair: Hair that grows straight and smooth. The hair follicle is in a vertical shape, so the hair cross-section is close to round. • Wavy hair: Hair with natural waves. The hair follicle is slightly tilted compared to straight hair, so the hair cross-section is more oval. • Curly hair: Hair with distinct curls. The hair follicle lies at an angle, with the hair cross-section being flat. • Coily hair: Hair with strong and very defined curls. The hair follicle is even more tilted, and the hair cross-section is very flat. So, why do hair follicles have different shapes? The answer lies in our genes. During fetal development, the genes that regulate the early stages of hair follicle formation determine the spacing and distribution of the follicles. The number of hair follicles formed during this period does not change after birth. Whether hair appears thick or sparse is not due to the number of hair follicles, but rather the number and thickness of the hairs growing from those follicles.   ｜How is hair created? The hair follicle is like a "production factory" for hair. The bottom part of the follicle, known as the hair bulb, is the "production room,” where various cells work together systematically to create hairs. • Dermal papilla cells: The dermal papilla functions like the control tower of the factory. It supplies the materials needed for hair production and gives instructions for the process. Located at the very bottom of the hair follicle, the dermal papilla is a protruding structure made up of capillaries and dermal papilla cells. Nutrients and oxygen required for hair production are delivered through the capillaries in this area. And the dermal papilla cells send signals to surrounding cells to start hair production and regulate when and how much hair will grow. • Matrix cells: Matrix cells can be compared to the workers directly responsible for producing hair. These cells, which surround the dermal papilla, form hair made of the hard protein keratin through active cell division and keratinization. As this process continues, the new hairs are gradually pushed upward and eventually fall out of the follicle. • Melanocytes: The melanocytes, located adjacent to the dermal papilla, are responsible for adding color to the hair. Just like the skin, they produce melanin pigments, which are absorbed into the matrix cells before they undergo keratinization, determining the color of the hair. In this way, various cells within the follicle actively communicate with each other to create hair. However, unlike nails or skin, which continuously form keratin, the hair follicle produces hairs in a cyclical process, where they eventually fall out over time. We call this process the hair cycle. ｜Hair growth cycle Our hair follows a precise cycle. Let's take a look at the four stages of hair growth step by step. ① Anagen: Hair growth phase This is the stage where new hair is formed and grows longer. As we can see from the hair covering our scalp, about 85-90% of our hair is in the growth phase. The anagen phase lasts for about 2-6 years, with a slight gender difference of 3-5 years for men and 4-6 years for women. During this period, follicular cells are actively proliferating and differentiating. At the same time, melanin pigments are produced, giving the hair its natural color. ② Catagen: Hair regression phase The catagen phase is when hair growth stops. Only about 1% of all hair is in this phase, which lasts for 2-3 weeks. The hair follicle gradually shrinks, and the hair starts to separate from the dermal papilla cells. During this time, follicular cells degenerate, and the production of melanin pigments also stops. ③ Telogen: The phase just before hair shedding Approximately 11-13% of all hair is in the telogen phase. This stage is a resting phase before new hairs begin to form, like the hibernation period for animals. The activity in the hair follicle stops, and the hairs enter a "waiting state" before shedding. ④ Exogen: Shedding phase After 2-4 months in the telogen phase, new hairs begin to grow, causing the existing hairs to naturally fall out. This is a normal part of the healthy hair cycle, and the hair that falls out during daily life is part of this process. The hair growth cycle is surprisingly designed to repeat about 25 times throughout our lifetime. However, this rhythm can be altered by various factors we encounter in life. This has been confirmed by numerous studies. When we generally describe a scalp as “healthy,” it has minimal impurities, itching, or inflammation and is in balance with the following conditions: • A mildly acidic pH of 5–6, similar to the skin • Maintain an average moisture level of 15–20% • A proper layer of sebum is formed on the scalp surface • Normal keratinization occurs • The area around the pores is clean with minimal sebum residue and dead skin cells • The microbial ecosystem is balanced While it would be great if this state could be maintained, the scalp environment is delicate and can easily be disrupted by various factors, leading to the development of scalp concerns. ｜Dry scalp Is your scalp dry, tight, or itchy? A dry scalp is caused by insufficient sebum production. When the natural sebum layer that helps retain moisture disappears, the scalp quickly becomes dehydrated, leading to concerns such as dryness and flaking. While dry scalp can appear temporarily during cold and dry winter seasons, if left untreated over time, it may progress into a sensitive scalp. ｜Oily scalp An oily scalp is caused by excessive sebum production, also known as ‘Hyperseborrhea’. If your hair feels greasy and clumps together even shortly after washing, you likely fall into this category. When sebum is produced in amounts beyond the normal range, it not only creates visible discomfort but can also lead to the buildup of sebum plugs, which cause inflammation, itching, and other issues. If it becomes severe, it can worsen and develop into conditions like seborrheic dermatitis or even hair loss. ｜Sensitive scalp Because the scalp is an area with a high density of nerves, it can easily become sensitive to several irritations. When exposed to continuous irritation, it can lead to discomfort such as tightness, pain, burning, or redness. Unlike sebum or dead skin cells, a sensitive scalp is classified as a sensory symptom — it can affect anyone regardless of scalp type. ｜Dandruff Dandruff is an extremely common condition, affecting over half of the adult population worldwide. While it is completely normal for dead skin cells to shed from the scalp, an excessive amount of flaking is a sign of a disrupted scalp environment. On oily scalps, the overgrowth of Malassezia, a fungus that causes dandruff, leads to large, yellowish, greasy flakes. On dry scalps, smaller, white flakes are more common. Dandruff can appear alongside other issues such as tightness, itching, and unpleasant odors. ｜Hair loss Hair loss refers not only to the shedding of hair but also to the gradual thinning and losing of strength. There are various causes and many different types of hair loss. One of the most common types is seasonal hair loss. Environmental pollution - a hidden cause of scalp issues Did you know that environmental pollution can cause hair loss? Among all parts of the body, the scalp and hair are particularly prone to accumulating impurities such as fine dust and heavy metals in the air. One past study found that the concentration of impurities on the scalp and hair was 1.5 to 2 times higher than in the air. When these impurities continue to accumulate, they can severely damage the scalp, triggering itchiness and inflammation. Fine dust, especially when it's very small, can penetrate the scalp barrier and be absorbed into hair follicle cells. This initiates oxidative stress, which attacks the follicles and leads to hair loss. It can also be absorbed into the hair itself, making it dull and stiff. So, should we wash our hair frequently to remove these impurities? While cleansing away existing pollutants is certainly important, it is better in the long run to strengthen the scalp’s own defense system. By nourishing the scalp and hair with healthy ingredients, you can build a strong barrier that prevents pollutant penetration. ｜2. Excessive UV exposure Sunlight helps produce vitamin D, which plays a vital role in scalp health. However, excessive exposure to sunlight can be harmful, as UV rays can create a harsh environment for the scalp. This is because it is not fully protected from UV rays, even if the scalp is shielded by a good defense, hair. The main reason prolonged UV exposure negatively affects the scalp is oxidative stress. UV rays generate excess active oxygen, which can damage not only scalp skin cells but also hair follicles. This damage may not be immediately visible, but over time, accumulated UV exposure can accelerate scalp aging and cause premature hair shedding. On days with strong sunlight, try to avoid direct UV exposure as much as possible and keep your scalp well-hydrated to prevent aging. Supplying the scalp with appropriate antioxidants helps prevent the attack of oxidative stress and protect the scalp. ｜3. Sudden seasonal change If you’ve ever experienced sudden scalp itchiness or dryness, it’s likely due to the change of seasons. During dry winters with cold winds, moisture is easily lost from the scalp, aggravating scalp conditions. In contrast, hot and humid summer weather increases the secretion of sebum and sweat. Since the scalp is covered with hair, it lacks ventilation and can create a favorable environment where microorganisms can proliferate. Scalp disorders actually follow seasonal patterns. Dandruff and seborrheic scalp tend to worsen in winter, while temporary seasonal hair loss often begins in autumn after the scalp endures the harsh summer. Check your scalp care routine according to the changing environment. Use lighter products that remove sebum and impurities in summer and moisturizing products to help maintain the scalp’s balance in winter. It coats the scalp and hair, protecting them from external irritants and preventing moisture loss. Because sebum plays such several roles, any changes in how it is secreted can significantly affect the scalp environment. • Changes in sebum production: The production of sebum is influenced by hormones, which means even small changes in daily life can affect how much sebum is produced. A scalp that lacks sebum easily loses moisture and becomes dry. On the other hand, excessive sebum production can easily trigger an oxidative process that has a detrimental effect on the scalp. This oxidation promotes the growth of harmful microorganisms, and oxidized sebum can harden and clog pores, leading to scalp irritation. • Changes in sebum composition: It’s also important to consider the composition of sebum. According to our findings, problematic scalps tend to show a decrease in lipids that help maintain barrier function, while lipids that trigger inflammation tend to accumulate. Understanding the role of sebum and maintaining its balance through proper care can help preserve the scalp’s natural protective barrier in a healthy state. ｜2. Disruption of the microbial balance A healthy scalp is home to a diverse range of microorganisms that coexist in harmony to help maintain a balanced scalp environment. However, various factors can disrupt this microbial balance, leading to noticeable changes in scalp conditions. While these changes may not be visible, they can be felt through discomfort such as itching or irritation. One of the most well-known scalp microorganisms is Malassezia, a fungus that feeds on sebum. It breaks down sebum and leaves residue on the skin surface. When the scalp's microbial balance is disturbed, Malassezia can proliferate excessively, and its lipid residue can irritate the scalp, leading to abnormal flaking, commonly known as dandruff. Since the scalp is an area of active sebum production, it naturally provides an ideal environment for Malassezia to thrive. However, microorganisms alone are not the sole cause of scalp issues. While they can accelerate existing problems on an already compromised scalp, their presence by itself does not cause scalp concerns. That’s why maintaining the natural microbial balance of the scalp is essential. ｜3. Imbalance of essential nutrients Scalp disorders can also be caused by either a deficiency or an excess of certain nutrients. This is because the nutrients we consume are delivered to the hair follicles through the bloodstream. It is well known that adequate nutrient intake plays an important role in hair production. Below are some key vitamins to help maintain a healthy scalp. • Niacinamide (Vitamin B3) helps improve the scalp barrier and prevent hair follicles from aging caused by oxidative stress. It also contributes to increasing hair thickness and improving overall hair health. • Panthenol (Vitamin B5) has long been used in hair care products for the purpose of preventing hair loss. It stimulates hair follicle cells, which can help promote hair growth. • Biotin (Vitamin B7) helps the formation of keratin, the primary protein in hair. People with a biotin deficiency may experience thinning hair and increased hair shedding. • Tocopherol (Vitamin E) has powerful antioxidant effects and helps eliminate lipid peroxides that can cause scalp disorders. Proper intake of Vitamin E can reduce oxidative stress on the scalp and thereby promote hair growth. In addition to vitamins, include protein, minerals, and essential fatty acids in your diet or apply them directly to the scalp. This can help support strong, healthier hair from the inside out.   The scalp is the tissue that covers the cranium and is the area where hair grows. As it is the area that extends from the face and neck, it is similar to the body skin. However, the scalp has its own unique characteristics, which make it an area that requires more meticulous care. Today, we will explore the basics of scalp science, including the characteristics of the scalp and the differences between the scalp and normal skin. ｜What is the scalp? The scalp is anatomically composed of five layers. By combining the first letters of the name of each layer, we can confirm that they form the word "SCLAP". Among these, the outermost skin layer, which we recognize as the scalp, is made up of the epidermis, dermis, and subcutaneous tissue, just like the body skin. Therefore, the skin layers of the scalp are structurally almost identical to the skin on the body skin. However, the scalp contains more nerve tissues and blood vessels than the skin, and because it is the area where hair grows, it is covered by thicker terminal hair, unlike the body skin. ｜How are skin and scalp different? ① High Hair Follicle Density The hair follicle can be simply described as the “A pocket that produces hair." It is found throughout the body skin, but the density of hair follicles is the highest on the scalp. There are approximately 100,000 to 150,000 hair follicles in a surface area of 650-700 ㎠. Since thicker hair grows, the hair follicles on the scalp are located deeper than on the skin. The cells in the hair follicle receive nutrients and produce hair through a process called keratinization. Looking more closely, these cells are mainly composed of dermal papilla cells, matrix cells, and melanocytes. The process is similar to how keratinocytes form keratin in the skin, but the type of cells that make keratin and the shape of the keratin formed are different. The scalp is therefore an area with a high density of hair follicles, where various types of cells work together to actively produce hair, making the role of the hair follicle particularly prominent. ② Active Sebum Production The sebaceous glands are connected to the hair follicles, where lipids such as triglycerides, wax esters, cholesterol, and squalene are produced. These lipids are secreted out of the pores through the sebaceous ducts and form a lipid layer on the surface of the skin. As with the skin, the lipid layer formed on the hair and scalp helps to retain moisture and provide protection. However, the scalp has one of the highest densities of sebaceous glands in the body. Due to its high sebum production, extreme changes in the amount of sebum secreted or the lipid composition of the scalp can easily lead to scalp disorders. Therefore, it is important to maintain a proper balance of oil and moisture on the scalp. ③ Quick Turnover Our skin goes through a process where new cells are formed, and old keratinocytes are shed. This process is called turnover. The scalp also undergoes turnover, but it has a faster turnover cycle compared to other areas of the body. Research has shown that skin turnover typically takes an average of 28 days, while the scalp's turnover cycle takes about 17 days. In addition, the keratinocyte layer on the scalp is thicker than on the skin, consisting of multiple layers, and the keratinocytes are larger in size. ④ Microbiome Did you know that there is a specific microbiome that lives mainly on the scalp? Different types of microbes live in various parts of our body, and the skin also has its own microbial ecosystem, known as the 'skin microbiome.' Malassezia, Propionibacterium, and Staphylococcus are the main microbes that make up the 'scalp microbiome.' Among these, Malassezia is a microbe that interacts closely with the scalp. In a healthy scalp, these microbes coexist in balance and help to protect the scalp. However, if the scalp environment is disrupted, the proportion of Malassezia can increase, leading to scalp disease. Therefore, maintaining the balance of scalp microbes is also important for a healthy scalp. ｜Understanding the Unique Characteristics of the Scalp The scalp is structurally similar to the skin, but it has its own unique characteristics, including the following: • Dense nerve tissues and blood vessels • High density of hair follicles and covered with thicker hairs • Active sebum production • Relatively faster cell turnover cycle • Unique microbial composition These unique characteristics of the scalp significantly impact on scalp health. While the points to manage are similar to those of the skin, the scalp requires special care because of these unique features. A well-maintained scalp is the foundation for healthy hair growth, so it's important to pay attention to the unique characteristics of the scalp for healthy hair. This result goes beyond the lab, demonstrating PEPTIDE-132’s ability to protect hair under everyday conditions. Consistent outcomes from both tensile strength and brushing tests confirm that PEPTIDE-132 could be the solution to revive and restore hair's true strength. Smooth and glossy to the surface of the hair The key to the hair's shine and softness lies in the cuticle, which is at the outermost layer of the hair. Made of overlapping, scale-like keratin layers, the cuticle acts as a shield to protect the inner structure of the hair. However, everyday factors such as heat styling, frequent dyeing and perming, UV rays, and brushing are the first to attack this cuticle. This can result in the cuticle becoming cracked and lifted, or even falling off, leading to damage throughout the hair. Most chemical sunscreens contain certain ingredients such as benzophenone, avobenzone, and Ethylhexyl Methoxycinnamate that prevents UV rays by transitioning into heat energy, before the UV rays absorbs into the skin. These ingredients send to sing your eyes, and may cause irritation if your eyes are sensitive. If that is the cause, using a physical sunscreen can be optional. 🔎Q8. When applying retinols should this be done to dry skin? Wet skin absorbs more. So this depends. If you have sensitive skin and want it to be less irritating, apply retinols to dry skin. If you're OK, then damp skin works too. 🔎Q9. Is it normal to get really, really dry skin when incorporating retinols? Retinols can cause irritation, redness, peeling and dry skin. Our cream includes Pnathenol, and our oil includes Squalane, both preventing dryness of the skin. If your skin still feels dry after using the products, add a moisturizing product at the end of your routine. Another tip is to start small with retinols! Apply a small amount, every other day until your skin builds tolerance. You can even try a retinol sandwich which goes moisturizer > retinol > moisturizer. 🔎Q10. Should we keep the retinol in dry cool areas away from the sun Retinols were weak to light, heat and oxidation so it is best kept refridgerated. A study has shown that tocotrienols have better antioxidant potency than tocopherols by a factor of 50 so it is called "Super Vitamin E". Hence, why we chose to formulate The Vitamin C 23 with "Super Vitamin E". 🔎Q2. Should all of the serums be used on damp skin? Or just the HA serum? A. All of the serums can be used on damp skin. 🔎Q3. What is the best way to combat the stinging sensation using vitamin C? It always stings my skin! A. This is a higher concentration of pure vitamin C, so it may come with skin irritation. We recommend you patch test on the back of your wrist, or on your neck before use.
