You know, make it risky for criminals to commit crime. They're going to commit less crime," that, according to economist and expert on guns and crime, John Lott. . . .

- [While Open Borders Advocates Claim that 35% of Illegal Aliens Deported had Criminal Convictions, They Ignore that at least Another 35% had Pending Criminal Charges](https://crimeresearch.org/2025/12/while-open-borders-advocates-claim-that-35-of-illegal-aliens-deported-had-criminal-convictions-they-ignore-that-at-least-another-35-had-pending-criminal-charges/): One point that the debate over deporting illegal aliens often ignores is that authorities frequently deport individuals after they have been arrested and charged with crimes, but before a court has convicted them. Open-borders advocates, including the Cato Institute, have claimed—based on earlier data—that from October 2024 through June 14, 2025, 65% of those detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) had not been convicted of a crime. That claim overlooks a crucial fact: at least 35% of those arrested had pending criminal charges at the time of their detention.

Yet, when compared to the number of illegals who are incarcerated, they are overrepresented in prison and jail populations by a factor of roughly 3 to 4 times.
- [CBS’s FBI TV Show Recognizes the Issue of Marginal Deterrence](https://crimeresearch.org/2025/12/cbss-fbi-tv-show-recognizes-the-issue-of-marginal-deterrence/): The Crime Prevention Research Center has often discussed the issue of marginal deterrence. When a mass public shooter has already murdered multiple people and facing multiple death penalties or life sentences, the additional penalty from a the person violating a gun-free zone is essentially no penalty at all. Taking five years from the murderers' fifth or sixth life isn't a penalty. By contrast, five years is a real penalty for an otherwise law-abiding citizen.

They famously took strong action in the 1990s and saw gun violence plummet." The myth of these supposed benefits from reduced gun violence rests on deeply flawed statistical analysis.

The Justice Department describes the 764 network as a "violent extremist" group that originated in Texas in 2021. Authorities say it preys on children and teenagers, coercing them to harm themselves and send explicit pictures. In an exclusive interview with The Epoch Times this week, FBI director Kash Patel said arrests linked to the network are up almost 500 percent this year.

How about the Police?](https://crimeresearch.org/2025/12/media-bias-wall-street-journal-claims-innocent-bystanders-shoot-by-people-legally-carrying-a-concealed-handgun-error-filled-article-provides-no-perspective-on-rate/): Wall Street Journal reporter Mark Maremont continues his attacks on people carrying concealed handguns (this titled "The Innocent Bystanders Caught in Deadly Crossfire of Self-Defense Shootings"). Previously we tried writing letters to the WSJ pointing out legal errors and data problems with an earlier piece he had. Now Maremont has another piece claiming there are four examples from 2022 to now of people legally carry a concealed handgun who accidentally shot a bystander when they fired their guns in self defense. Not only does he fail to provide any perspective for this with 1.67 million Americans using guns defensively each year or that 21 million Americans have a concealed handgun permit, but only two of the four examples actually fit the storyline Maremont is pushing (a case in Massachusetts and another in Michigan). The Ohio case involved an employee with a gun at work so there is no issue of concealed carry. The other case from California doesn't appear to involve someone with a concealed handgun permit. While Maremont's article discusses Constitutional Carry, none of the four cases he discusses involve Constitutional Carry.

See also Dr. Lott's new op-ed at Real Clear Politics ("She Saved Her Life. 7-Eleven Fired Her") and his latest piece at The Federalist ("Democrats’ Favorite Talking Point About Children And Gun Deaths Is A Lie").

How is it possible that the parents didn't foresee this shooting?
- [On the Lars Larson Show: To Discuss Stockton Mass Shooting](https://crimeresearch.org/2025/12/on-the-lars-larson-show-to-discuss-stockton-mass-shooting/): Dr. John Lott talked to Lars Larson on his national radio show about the recent deadly mass shooting at a toddler's birthday party in Stockton, California. They also discussed new data showing that U.S. mass killings have dropped to a 20-year low in 2025.
- [More Television Police Show Bias: FBI Fighting Criminals Using Machine Guns](https://crimeresearch.org/2025/12/more-television-police-show-bias-fbi-fighting-criminals-using-machine-guns/): Apparently another TV show doesn’t think the strict gun control in the UK or Belgium is working too well. As the Crime Prevention Research Center has pointed out many, many times, television crime shows seem to think criminals are constantly using machine guns to commit crime. In real life, criminals generally use machine guns so rarely that a 2016 survey of prison inmates only broke down the numbers for uses in crime of handguns (11.2%), rifles (0.8%), and shotguns (1.1%). There are few rifles, and the survey did not even mention fully automatic weapons. A similar finding is available from the FBI UCR report where 2.6% of all murders involve rifles of any type and 0.3% of all murders involve unspecified “other guns.” There is a reason for that. Since 1934, there was only one possible known use ever of a civilian using a machine gun in a murder. And even before 1934, they were very rare.
- [The NICS Background Check System has Issued 5.1 Million Denials Since 1998, Only 0.1% were Referred for Prosecution and the Conviction Rate is Less than 0.01%](https://crimeresearch.org/2025/12/the-nics-background-check-system-has-issued-5-1-million-denials-since-1998/): Between 1998 and 2021, there were about 4.8 million denials for gun purchases. There were another 131,865 denials in 2022, 116,587 in 2023, and 110,505 in 2024. The total is about 5.1 million denials.
- [The Universal Background Check in DC is $168, to transfer four guns between the same two people at the same time is $672](https://crimeresearch.org/2025/12/the-universal-background-check-in-dc-is-168-to-transfer-four-guns-between-the-same-two-people-at-the-same-time-is-672/): If you add up the fees for the Federal Firearms Licensee ($120) as well as the fees for the background check charged by the DC police department ($35) and their registration fee ($13), the total cost of a universal background check is $168. Amazingly, even if one person is transferring multiple guns to the same person, there is not one single transfer fee. If four guns are to be transferred, the total cost of the transfer is $672. If someone can provide a benign explanation for that, it would be appreciated.
