- [Design for Sustainability and Regeneration - EN](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/design-for-sustainability-and-regeneration-en-working2) - [Gaia Education’s work with Agenda 2030 and the SDG](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/gaia-education-s-work-with-agenda-2030-and-the-sdg): In 2015 the world was setting out on an ambitious path and journey towards sustainability with the agreement by all 193 countries represented in the UN at that time, not only agreeing to the Paris Climate Agreement to reign in climate change/ the climate emergency, but also on the Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) with the aim of transforming our world we live in and to leave no one behind.  - [Gaia Schools](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/gaia-schools): A network that empowers students, teachers, and communities by fostering a deep connection with nature, community, and self-development. Aside from the obvious, the age of science and technology has shaped today's view that we are somehow separate from nature and our surroundings and that our minds & bodies are not linked. We need deep transformation Our civilization is careening at an accelerating pace toward a precipice of climate breakdown, ecological destruction, and gaping inequality. Redirecting humanity’s trajectory will require a fundamental transformation of society encompassing virtually every aspect of the human experience: our values, our goals and our collective behavior. The depiction of humans as selfish individuals, the view of nature as a resource to be exploited, and the idea that technology alone can fix our biggest problems, are all profound misconceptions that have collectively led our civilization down a path to disaster. We need to transform our core human identity, our relationships with others, and with the nonhuman world. Learn the principles and practice of Deep Transformation This course, based largely on the work of Jeremy Lent’s recent book The Web of Meaning, but also drawing on many other diverse sources, lays out principles and practices of deep transformation for the individual, for community, and for society at large. It offers participants a deep but accessible guided exploration of an alternative life-affirming worldview based on the intersection of modern science and the world’s great wisdom traditions, along with an inspiring and practical vision of pathways that could lead to an ecological civilization. Dive into your own experience of Deep Transformation Understand the flaws of our dominant worldview Explore an alternative, life-affirming worldview of deep interconnectedness Learn how modern science validates the great wisdom traditions of earlier cultures Discover the exciting and practical pathways that lead to a regenerative future: an Ecological Civilization - [OUR TEAM](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/our-team): Gaia Education team and board are spread across the world. GEN has decades of experience working with ecovillages around the world and seeing first hand how communities can thrive in very different ecosystems, set of values and different governmental contexts.  - [Inside the Ecovillage Design Education Programme at Alaya Ecolodge](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/116883-inside-the-ecovillage-design-education) by Gaia Education (Feb 10, 2026): hat does regenerative living actually feel like when it’s not just a concept, but a way of life? For several weeks in North West Bali, that question was lived, breathed, cooked, designed, and deeply felt through the Ecovillage Design Education (EDE) programme at Alaya Ecolodge. Nestled near Bali Barat National Park in Pemuteran, Alaya became far more than a beautiful retreat—it transformed into a living laboratory for regeneration, community, and bioregional transition. This programme went beyond traditional classroom learning, integrating participants into the "Conscious Collective"—a visionary bioregional transition involving four distinct areas focused on wellness, indigenous forestry, co-operative economics, and long-term ecovillage education. - [Discover Energy](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/116460-discover-energy) by Gaia Education (Jan 27, 2026): “Energy is thinking, feeling; it is interest, enthusiasm, greed, passion, lust, ambition, hate. Painting pictures, inventing machines, building bridges, making roads, cultivating the fields, playing games, writing poems, singing, dancing, going to the temple, worshipping - these are all expressions of energy.” From an “energy systems” perspective, energy refers to the crucial “flows” that are important to the long-term vitality of any system, whether a person, a community, an ecosystem or an economy. ⚡Yes, you are energy. You are an energy system. - [Solstice Reflections: A Moment of Global Connection](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/115991-solstice-reflections-a-moment-of-global) by Gaia Education (Dec 23, 2025): As this year draws to a close, we look back on another orbit around the sun ☀️—a year of learning, collaboration, and deepening commitment to regenerative futures. When we think of livelihood as a form of service to the wellbeing us, our community and nature, new possibilities begin to open. In a world where conventional notions of “career” often center on productivity and profit, the idea of a regenerative livelihood invites us to re-envision our purpose through a wider lens—one that honours interconnection, creativity, and care. A regenerative livelihood is more than a job. It is a living expression of who we are and how we contribute to the flourishing of life around us. It asks: How can we earn our living in ways that restore balance, equity, and vitality in our systems—social, ecological, and economic? A Gaia Education online course coming up 'Cultivating Regenerative Livelihoods' explores how to meaningfully contribute while making a living to yourself and family. The course starts 31st January 2026 and we are inviting you to join us.  - [What does 4D Literacy mean?](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/111328-what-does-4d-literacy-mean) by Gaia Education (Oct 21, 2025): The year 2025 marks the 20th anniversary of Gaia Education, as well as, my 20th anniversary of working with Gaia Education. So it is my great pleasure to invite you to the 3rd edition of the 4D Regenerative Design Literacy learning journey. We live in turbulent and uncertain times, of rapidly deepening polarization and social, ecological and economic degradation, where are culture of othering has both the old and the young alienated from true political dialogue and civic participation, where despite ever more people calling for an end to our madness, we continue to destroy the world's soils, forests and oceans, and where globalization has made the tech-billionaires more influential than nation states while local and regional economies have been eroded to the detriment of the many for the benefit of a few. We will structure our 6 weeks together using the simple 4-D 'whole systems design' framework of approaching the nurturing of community resilience and bioregional regeneration through a process that aims to pay attention to and integrate social design, economic design, ecological design and a heightened awareness of simultaneously operating diverse worldviews are affecting how we participate in the nested complexity of life's regenerative impulse. - [Weaving the Four Dimensions: A Personal Journey to Gaia](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/110039-weaving-the-four-dimensions-a-personal) by Rafael Antunes (Sep 4, 2025) - [Relearning the Gift of Reciprocity: Walking with Indigenous Wisdom in a Time of Crises](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/110045-relearning-the-gift-of-reciprocity) by Gaia Education (Sep 2, 2025): In these unraveling times, when ecological collapse and cultural fragmentation press in on every side, many of us are asking a simple but radical question: How do we come back into right relationship with life? Not just with the land, but with each other — and with ourselves. For those on a path of ecological regeneration, systems change, and inner transformation, Indigenous wisdom offers more than a source of knowledge. It offers a mirror. A reminder. A reckoning. And, perhaps most importantly, an invitation. This is the kind of work Dr. Lyla June Johnston is doing — not just as a scholar or artist, but as a cultural bridge-builder rooted in Diné (Navajo), Tsétsêhéstâhese (Cheyenne), and European lineages. Through her music, her doctoral research, her poetry, and now her teaching, she carries forward ancestral knowledge not as nostalgia, but as a living system of values, responsibilities, and ways of being — urgently needed in the modern world. - [Connective Roots: Why This Course Can Transform the Way We Build Culture](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/109823-connective-roots-why-this-course-can-transform-culture) by Rafael Antunes (Aug 19, 2025) - [My Regenerative Journey with the 4D Framework - Kazi Shahnoor Ashraf](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/108833-my-regenerative-journey-with-the-4d) by Gaia Education (Aug 9, 2025): From Corporate Disillusionment to Homecoming I remember sitting in a high-rise office abroad, surrounded by all the markers of success I had chased for years. As an expatriate climbing the corporate ladder, I had financial security and a promising career – yet I felt utterly empty. The more I achieved in the corporate world, the more disillusioned I became with the notion that growth and profit alone could bring fulfillment. In those restless days, a question kept gnawing at me: what was the true purpose of my work and life? That inner void eventually pushed me to make a drastic change. Leaving corporate life was both daunting and liberating. I packed my bags and returned home to Bangladesh, not entirely sure what I would do next. What I did know was that I needed to reconnect – with my roots, with nature, and with a sense of community that had been missing in my isolated corporate existence. Back in my homeland, I spent time in rural areas and with local people, rediscovering the simple joys of muddy fields, monsoon rains, and communal tea circles. Breathing the warm, humid air of Bangladesh and getting my hands in the soil brought me a healing sense of belonging. I realized that true wealth was not in paychecks or promotions, but in the health of my community and environment. - [The Patterning of Hope - a movement for universal future consciousness](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/108628-the-patterning-of-hope-a-movement-for) by Gaia Education (Jul 30, 2025): How are we to act in the face of the existential risks we face? How can we meet the uncertainty and complexity of the future with hope? If we are all to live well and thrive on one planet we must bring about profound changes in our ways of life 🌎 Coming out of my work with colleagues in the International Futures Forum and H3Uni, Three Horizons offers a simple and powerful shared language and practice for convening the future. It naturally encourages a view of the patterns of life and our role in sustaining or changing them, and brings people together to get into action from a perspective of hope. Over the last two decades we’ve been teaching and sharing this practice and it is now being widely used internationally across all sectors. As part of these initiatives I’ve worked with my wonderful colleague Yasu Mali at Leaders’ Quest to deliver training to hundreds of policymakers, researchers, business leaders, philanthropists, and activists to use Three Horizons in service of a better world, working in diverse fields, from conservation to child health. - [My Journey with Gaia Education, by Sally Bogale Co-CEO](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/108634-my-journey-with-gaia-education-by-sally) by Sally Bogale (Jul 28, 2025) - [SDG Handbook - How to use it to facilitate conversation about SDGs in any setting](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/108343-sdg-handbook-how-to-use-it-to-facilitate) by Gaia Education (Jul 14, 2025): The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) Multipliers Handbook offers a detailed description of how to prepare, promote and facilitate an SDGs Training of Multipliers or an SDG implementation workshop using Gaia Education’s SDGs Implementation Flashcards. The intention behind offering this handbook is to make it easy for participants in a SDG Training of Multipliers to step into the role of a multiplier and to feel confident in offering trainings and implementation workshops to their business team, in their organisation, in local community centres and town halls, or in schools and universities. The well structured training flow (as detailed in the handbook) along with the flashcards enable facilitators to let the participants — who know more about their particular context than the facilitator might — do most of the creative work. The role of the facilitator is more to set people up to have these co-creative conversations and help them harvest and deepen into strategies to implement the results of their creative SDG brainstorming. The handbook outlines who the training is for, how it can be adapted to different contexts, a training materials check-list, how to set up the workshop space, and desired outcomes for the training. The handbook contains two detailed workshop scripts for a day-long and a half-day SDGs Training of Multipliers/SDG implementation workshops. - [A Conversation with Dr. Lyla June Johnston](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/108338-a-conversation-with-dr-lyla-june) by Rafael Antunes (Jul 11, 2025): We recently had the honour of hosting a powerful live conversation with Dr. Lyla June Johnston, Indigenous scholar, poet, and activist, to explore the themes and intentions behind our new course: Indigenous Knowledge Systems, starting September 8th. During the session, Dr. June shared moving insights about the role of ancestral wisdom in today’s world, the importance of unlearning colonial ways of thinking, and how Indigenous knowledge systems can guide us toward a regenerative and relational future. - [My Journey with Gaia Education - by Yan Teixeira](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/108263-my-journey-with-gaia-education-by-yan) by Yan Beltrame Teixeira (Jul 7, 2025): I love to tell the story of how the 4D Framework changed my perspective and opened my eyes to a whole new world. It opened my eyes to the regenerative potential we hold as part of nature, inviting us to act in cooperation with both human and non-human communities. - [SDG Flashcards](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/108037-sdg-flashcards) by Gaia Education (Jun 26, 2025): The SDG Implementation flashcards for community ownership & local implementation of the Global Goals    It is firmly believed that the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) should not be separated from the global communities that forge them, and Gaia Education has developed this educational tool in collaboration with the UNESCO GAP Secretariat. The SDG Teaching Cards contain more than 200 questions on the system-wide approach to achieving the 2030 Agenda. These cards enable a participatory and problem-centric group conversation and solutions oriented multi-perspectival dialogue. They invite participants to engage and to collaborate to identify actions and solutions to implement the SDGs in ways that are relevant to their lives and communities, locally. This is an effective way to establish local community ownership and realisation for the UN Sustainable Development Goals. We at Gaia Education always use these cards at the SDG Training of Multipliers, but they are also adaptable to any setting you might be working in ( (e.g. local public bodies, communities, schools, universities, business etc.) - [SDGs & the Earth Charter](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/107995-sdgs-the-earth-charter) by Gaia Education (Jun 23, 2025): Background and Context? As was explained before (see for example SDGs explained blog post on SDGs & the European Green Deal) there have been many global declarations and agreements in relation to environmental and social goals/rights, starting with the Universal Declaration of Human Rights in 1948 and continued ever since, particularly at least since the 1970s in this case through the UN system, including most recently a UN resolution on the human right for a clean, healthy and sustainable life in 2022, all of which have implications for regional and national laws and regulations.  However, there are other, bottom-up initiatives which have evolved to provide guidance, agreements, principles and practices for creating sustainable and socially just futures for all.  One very prominent global such initiative is the Earth Charter (EC), which some call the missing ethical guidance tool for the Agenda 2030 and the SDGs.  The Earth Charter is a product of a decade-long, extensive, inclusive, worldwide, cross-cultural, bottom-up dialogue on common goals, principles and shared values. It is used as an educational instrument; as a reference and tool in the development of policies, for planning and decisions and in many other ways. The Earth Charter was officially launched in the year 2000. The EC is an ethical foundation for actions to build a more just, sustainable, regenerative and peaceful global society in the 21st century. It articulates to "seek to inspire in all peoples a sense of global interdependence and shared responsibility for the well-being of the human family, the greater community of life, and future generations". It offers a vision of hope and a call to action, with a strong foundation in and connection to human, social, indigenous and environmental rights and in that it has a strong connection to and with  the Agenda 20230 and the SDGs. It calls upon humanity to help create a global partnership at a critical juncture in history. The Earth Charter's vision proposes that environmental protection, human rights, equitable human development, and peace are interdependent and indivisible. The Earth Charter (EC) is a document with sixteen principles powering a global movement. The EC enunciates the values and principles by which sustainable development can be achieved. When you apply it to your business, school or community, you begin turning conscience into action to make all life on Earth thrive. It is seen by some as the foundation and guiding principles towards and ‘ecological civilisation’, where a shift of human consciousness with whole systems based and holistic as well as integral, planet centric worldviews, beliefs, values, mindsets and attitudes as a path towards a “symbiocene” (instead of “Anthropocene”) area in Earth history.  - [SDGs & the European Green Deal ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/107888-sdgs-the-european-green-deal) by Gaia Education (Jun 16, 2025): SDG post #19 - SDGs & the European Green Deal Hi #sustainability champions, as indicated in our last post on the IDGs you may have thought that we are all done and dusted with the SDGs having gone through all the individual SDGs one by one to polish our knowledge and upskill in SDG learning. As you know we send out a post approximately once weekly and you find previous SDGs posts on this blog roll. But we continue the journey with some additional explorations related to the Agenda 2030 and the SDGs, which we feel are important and worthwhile to know about. Today we tackle the relationship between the SDGs and the European Green Deal. As before you can follow or connect with us and see what we have to offer related to upskilling your change maker abilities (of tools and training) on our SDG toolkit webpages. ✔ So let’s explore the EGD, also known as  "The European Green Deal ” and its relationship to the SDGs in a concise manner suitable for learning. - [IDG - Inner Development Goals explained](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/107833-idg-inner-development-goals-explained) by Gaia Education (Jun 12, 2025): Background and Context of the IDG? As you are very well and maybe painfully aware having followed the SDGs explained blog series, now that we are way past the halfway point to the deadline of the Agenda 2030, the unfortunate reality is that progress has so far been disappointing, glacially slow and is still far off track and in peril. Data released in the 2024 Sustainability Development Report shows that based on the current pace of progress, a mere 17% of the SDG targets are on track to be achieved. In fact, it indicates that we are further off-track than  six years ago as a consequence of the ongoing pandemic, rising inflation and the cost-of-living crisis, planetary, environmental and economic distress, along with regional and national unrest, escalating, conflicts, and natural disasters and the trajectory looks rather grim. While possessing the necessary resources and technology to achieve the goals, considering the SDGs solely as technical and to some extent social problems solvable through structural policy instruments or other external methods might be contributing to our lack of progress. The SDGs provide a tangible roadmap, but a crucial question arises: do humans currently possess the capacity to navigate this intricate and interconnected landscape of challenges? Our evolutionary history, which has us primed for immediate threats and short-term decision-making, often falls short when confronted with long-term, abstract problems. The complexity of our modern environment and societal issues often outstrips our innate cognitive capacities, triggering our unconscious psychological barriers such as denial, rationalisation or discordance, among other ‘dragons of inaction’. “A regenerative human culture is healthy, resilient and adaptable; it cares for the planet and it cares for life in the awareness that this is the most effective way to create a thriving future for all of humanity.”  Daniel Christian Wahl, Author, Educator, Innovator, Designer, Gaia Education Advisor and course creator Addressing our global challenges necessitates a change in the underlying worldviews, beliefs, values and mindsets that originally caused them. It requires an innovative approach to identify, rectify and reshape the fundamental origins of these issues – human consciousness. Fortunately, modern research shows that the inner abilities we (individually and collectively) need to face and overcome these complex challenges can be developed. This was the starting point for the Inner Development Goals initiative. In an era where attention to external factors and siloed mechanistic solutions often take precedence, the concept of Inner Development emerges as an innovative approach for communicating the value of personal and collective development and growth to collective sustainability and systemic change. Unlike conventional goals that focus solely on material gains, the IDGs delve into the realm of integrated development, encompassing emotional, psychological, social, and spiritual well-being to better equip us for the unprecedented challenges we face today. The IDGs is an open network co-creating the Inner Development Goals (IDG) – a non-profit, open-source initiative committed to fostering inner development towards more sustainable futures. They research, collect, and communicate science-based skills and qualities that help to live purposeful, sustainable, and productive lives. So far they have developed an inner development framework and a toolbox of various methods and approaches to achieve the attainment of such inner skills, through a network of thousands of contributors worldwide. - [Leyla Kazim's debut book](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/107666-leyla-kazims-debut-book) by Gaia Education (Jun 3, 2025): What happens when the only place you've called home (London) is unable to support the kind of life you dream of? Three years ago my husband and I made a life-changing decision and it is now finally, really happening. *inhale* 1) We are uprooting our entire lives and moving to Portugal. We are building a house powered by the sun on a 3-acre patch of countryside with a ruin, just outside Lisbon. We are doing this to answer a calling to the land. and… 2) I've written a book about it! It's my debut book. And I wrote it completely in secret. Almost no one has known about this book, until now. - [SDG 17 - Partnerships for the Goals ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/107652-sdg-17-partnerships-for-the-goals) by Gaia Education (Jun 2, 2025): What is SDG 17 about? Sustainable Development Goal 17 (SDG 17) is a global commitment to "partnerships for the goals". It covers a substantial and diverse variety of topics such as related to enhancing availability and access to financial resources within countries and internationally particularly for developing countries, debt relief and fair debt management, increased investment into sustainable development, increased overseas development aid levels, fair sharing of and transfer of knowledge and technology to developing countries, create and invigorate global, regional and national partnerships for sustainable development including public, private and civil society, ensure policy coherence for sustainable development, universal, rules based, open, non-discriminatory and fair trading system to support developing nations, ensure macroeconomic stability, enhance data collection capability and availability and measures/metrics for sustainable development. It is therefore a pertinent and foundational and enabling topic everywhere and for all of the SDGs.  Why does SDG 17 matter? In a landscape of declining international cooperation and rising geopolitical tensions and open conflicts, strengthened global partnerships and enhanced cooperation are urgently needed to address widening financing gaps, reinforce post-pandemic recovery and promote as well as achieve sustainable development, particularly in the least developed and other vulnerable countries.  On the other hand the world today is more interconnected than ever before. Improving access to technology and knowledge is an important way to share ideas and foster innovation. Coordinating policies to help developing countries manage their debt, as well as promoting investment for the least developed, is vital to achieve sustainable development. The Global Goals can only be met if we work together. International investments and support is needed to ensure innovative technological development, fair trade and fair market access, especially for developing countries.  While official development assistance  (ODA) from developed countries increased by 66 percent between 2000 and 2014, humanitarian crises brought on by conflict or natural disasters continue to demand financial resources and aid. Many countries also require official development assistance (ODA) to encourage development and trade. - [Gaia School’s 10th anniversary](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/107250-gaia-school-s-10th-anniversary) by Gaia Education (May 20, 2025): In 2024 Gaia School celebrated its 10th anniversary – ten years of educational journey marked not just by the passage of time but by growth in knowledge and collaboration. It has been a path shaped not only by lessons taught but also by values lived – lessons that have touched students, teachers, and the wider community. Throughout these years, the school has grown from a small primary initiative into a full-scale general education school. New classes, teachers, learning opportunities, and cooperative projects have been added. Outdoor education and project-based learning have become core elements, allowing students to connect what they learn with the world around them. In 2025 the school teaches 250 learners from the ages on 7-18 and a team of 30 teachers are supporting the development of the students. One of the most important lessons learned at Gaia School is that every child has their own path and rhythm. Rather than trying to fit everyone into the same mould, the school has embraced diversity and personal growth. Families have an opportunity to combine stationary and homeschooling according to the needs of their lifestyle. - [SDG 16 - Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/106937-sdg-16-peace-justice-and-strong) by Gaia Education (May 15, 2025): What is SDG 16 about? Sustainable Development Goal 16 (SDG 16) is a global commitment to "promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels". It covers a substantial and diverse variety of topics such as related to peaceful and inclusive societies, securing equal opportunities, protection of basic human and civil rights, securing the rule of law and the access to legal institutions, combating organised crime, creating inclusive and accessible institutions, providing for participation in decision making at all levels, but also reduction of violence of all forms and the reduction of corruption and bribery and more. It is to tackle existing injustice, persecution, violence and abuse and the neglect of human and equal rights, opportunities and participation for all including the laws, regulations as well as accessible institutions for creating peaceful and just societies is therefore a pertinent and fundamental topic everywhere.  Why does SDG 16 matter? Around the world, we need peace in every sense, now more than ever before. Yet the road to global peace and security has become even more complex and perilous. Global forced displacement is at an all-time high, exceeding 120 million people forced to flee from persecution, conflict, violence and human rights violations as of May 2024. Between 2022 and 2023, civilian casualties experienced the highest spike since the adoption of the 2030 Agenda, largely due to the wars in Palestine and Ukraine. Persistent and rapidly increasing threats to human security across the globe underscore the breakdown of peaceful and inclusive societies, crucial for sustainable development and the need to restore trust and strengthen and renew global peace and security frameworks to heed the desperate pleas for peace from countless voices worldwide, particularly for many of the ongoing conflicts. People everywhere should be free of fear from all forms of violence and feel safe as they go about their lives whatever their ethnicity, faith or sexual orientation. However, ongoing and new violent conflicts and threat of conflicts as well as geopolitical escalations around the world are derailing the global path to peace and achievement of SDG 16.  High levels of armed violence and insecurity have a destructive impact on a country’s development, while sexual violence, crime, exploitation and torture are prevalent where there is conflict or no rule of law, and countries must take measures to protect those who are most at risk. Governments, civil society and communities need to work together to find lasting solutions to conflict and insecurity. Strengthening the rule of law and promoting human rights is key to this process, as is reducing the flow of illicit arms, illegal drugs, combating corruption, and ensuring inclusive participation at all times. SDG 16 aligns with the broader human rights frameworks by promoting societies that respect and uphold individual rights, as well as the right to privacy, freedom of expression, and access to information as well as inclusive  public and political participation and more. Rising and escalating conflicts and violent organised crime persist around the world, causing immense human suffering and hampering sustainable development. Corruption continues to divert resources from sustainable development, with one in five people reporting being asked to pay or having paid a bribe to a public official in the last 12 months. With one third of prisoners un-sentenced worldwide, achieving just judicial processes and improving prison conditions is imperative. - [SDG 15 - Life on Land](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/106580-sdg-15-life-on-land) by Gaia Education (May 8, 2025): What is SDG 15 about? Sustainable Development Goal 15 (SDG 15) is a global commitment to "protect, restore and promote sustainable use of terrestrial ecosystems, sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt biodiversity loss & land degradation and reverse it". It is one of the key environmental SDGs and for taking immediate and decisive actions to terrestrial biodiversity loss, combat pollution, land and soil degradation, desertification, deforestation and for sustainable land resources use and biodiversity and ecosystems protection and does not only affect all others SDGs, but will be crucially  important for not only reaching any of the SDGs but for creating a liveable future for all. It covers a substantial and diverse variety of critically important topics in relation to how to conserve and sustainably use our lands like the inclusion of reduction of deforestation and desertification, reduction of soil pollution and soil loss, the protection and restoration of terrestrial biodiversity, ecosystem and habitat restoration, reforestation, prevention of illegal wildlife trade and management of invasive species, but also sustainable use of land resources including forests, soils, agriculture, all the way to tourism, education, knowledge generation, sharing and technology transfer as well as funding particularly for least developed countries . This is a critical  topic for all nations, which is a core part of our multiple crises caused by overconsumption, waste, energy use and overuse of resources, hence an essential topic for any individual, community or organisation but of course governments at all levels anywhere, as every one of us lives on the land and is of the land and depends on the land!  At least biodiversity loss and resources overuse are some of the more widely discussed environmental (but also social and economic) topics and even if people have hardly heard of the SDG before, they are certainly aware (and may have been impacted by) land and ecosystems degradation, deforestation, pollution or resources overuse and their consequences (e.g. flooding, droughts, crop failures, wildfires, etc).  It has to be said upfront that everything said about achieving SDG 15 is in context of the separate but more recent UN Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) of 2022 (which had already precursor agreements), which determines the globally agreed upon actions on biodiversity loss, but which is  also part of the SDG15 targets and it would be is the aim to integrate the SDGs and biodiversity goals and targets of the  Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework  much more closely, in order to be able to achieve all, due to their tight interconnectedness.  - [SDG 14 - Life Below Water](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/106554-sdg-14-life-below-water) by Gaia Education (May 5, 2025): What is SDG 14 about? Sustainable Development Goal 14 (SDG 14) is a global commitment to "conserve and sustainably use the oceans, seas and marine resources for sustainable development". It is one of the key environmental SDGs and for taking immediate and decisive actions to marine biodiversity loss, combat pollution and for sustainable marine resources use and does not only affect all others SDGs, but will be important for not only reaching any of the SDGs but for creating a liveable future for all. It covers a substantial and diverse variety of very important topics in relation to how to conserve and sustainably use marine resources like the inclusion of reduction of marine pollution and ocean acidification, the protection of marine biodiversity, ecosystems and habitats, prevention of overfishing and sustainable use of marine resources including coastal and marine tourism, protection of local small scale fisheries, knowledge generation, sharing and technology transfer as well as funding particularly for least developed countries . This is an important topic for most nations, which is an important part of our multiple crises caused by overconsumption, waste, energy use and overuse of resources, hence an essential topic for any individual, community or organisation but of course governments at all levels almost anywhere.  At least marine biodiversity loss and resources overuse are some of the more widely discussed environmental (but also social and economic) topics and even if people have hardly heard of the SDG before, they are certainly aware (and may have been impacted by) marine pollution or resources overuse.  It has to be said upfront that everything said about achieving SDG 14 is in context of the separate but more recent UN Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework (GBF) of 2022 (which had already precursor agreements), which determines the globally agreed upon actions on biodiversity loss, but which is  also part of the SDG14 targets and it would be highly desirable to integrate the SDGs and biodiversity goals and targets of the  Kunming-Montreal Biodiversity Framework  much more closely, in order to be able to achieve all, due to their tight interconnectedness.  - [A Doughnut that's Good for California and the World - Webinar with Della Duncan and Emma Woods](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/106120-a-doughnut-thats-good-for-california-and) by Gaia Education (Apr 21, 2025) - [SDG 13 - Climate Action](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/106015-sdg-13-climate-action) by Gaia Education (Apr 17, 2025): What is SDG 13 about? Sustainable Development Goal 13 (SDG 13) is a global commitment to "take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts". It is probably the single most important SDG of all from its urgency to take immediate and decisive emergency actions to combat climate change and does not only affect all others very deeply, but will be pivotally crucial for not only reaching any of the SDGs but for creating a liveable future for all. It covers a substantial and diverse variety of critical topics in relation to how to combat climate change and its impacts like the inclusion of climate action in national policies, the improvements of climate change knowledge, transfer of climate change knowledge, taking of  immediate actions, improve resilience and adaptation towards climate change, and significantly increase finances for climate change action particularly for developing countries. This is the pivotal and critical topic everywhere, which is at the heart of our current environmental and other crisis caused by overconsumption and energy and resources use and waste, hence the essential topic for any individual, community or organisation but of course governments at all levels anywhere.  Climate change and climate action is the most widely discussed environmental (but also social and economic) topic of all and even if people have hardly heard of the SDG before, they are certainly aware (and may have been impacted by) of climate change and its impacts, but also about climate change mitigation and adaptation.  - [What if Women Designed the City? ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/105900-what-if-women-designed-the-city) by Gaia Education (Apr 8, 2025): Historically, modern cities have been planned and built primarily by taking the men’s experience as a reference. As a result, cities tend to function better for men than they do for women, children, older people, all levels of ability and gender identities. However, a shift is underway – women are stepping up as key protagonists in shaping our cities, and there is a growing interest in a mosaic of gender-sensitive policies and interventions springing from cities such as Vienna, Barcelona, Gaborone, Umeå, Florianópolis, Glasgow, and Lyon. Embedded in the richness of women’s everyday life experiences, the e-learning programme – based on May East's research and book What if Women Designed the City? – offers a compelling perspective on urban development as seen through the eyes of women from different countries and diverse backgrounds who reveal multiple untapped potentials rooted in the uniqueness of their neighbourhoods towards cities that work for all 🏙️ - [SDG 12 - Responsible Consumption and Production explained](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/105876-sdg-12-responsible-consumption-and) by Gaia Education (Apr 4, 2025): What is SDG 12 about? Sustainable Development Goal 12 (SDG 12) is a global commitment to "ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns". It covers a substantial and diverse variety of topics in relation to how people consume products and services but also on how their production can occur in a sustainable manner including sustainable consumption and production behaviours, patterns and processes, sustainable and efficient use of natural resources, reduction in chemicals and waste generation and its management, half food waste & losses, abolish inefficient subsidies for fossil fuels, raise awareness and action for sustainable development and sustainable tourism and more, hence a pertinent and crucial topic everywhere, which goes to the heart of our current environmental and other crisis of overconsumption and energy and resources waste, hence a critical  topic for any individual, community or organisation anywhere.  Why does SDG 12 matter? The way in which societies use and care for natural resources fundamentally shapes the well-being of humanity, the environment and the economy. One of the core objectives of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development is to decouple economic development from resource use and environmental degradation, notably through improved resource efficiency, effectiveness and levels of use (i.e. sufficiency). - [Celebrating 20 Years of Gaia Education - our brief history](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/105800-celebrating-20-years-of-gaia-education) by Gaia Education Main (Apr 1, 2025): In 1995, a landmark conference was held at Ecovillage Findhorn in Scotland, uniting around 400 individuals and eco-communities from all corners of the globe. This historic event marked the birth of the Global Ecovillage Network (GEN), a movement that would go on to inspire communities and individuals committed to creating a more sustainable, regenerative world. In those early days, the focus was on connection—sharing experiences, learning from one another, and showcasing the best practices from ecovillages, which were rapidly becoming living laboratories for sustainability. These first meetings helped establish the foundations for a growing global movement aimed at transforming communities, cultures, and economies for a better future. As the movement grew, it became clear that education was a key tool for spreading the practices and knowledge that were flourishing in ecovillages and other sustainable communities. This realisation sparked the formation of the Global Ecovillage Educators for a Sustainable Earth (GEESE)—a group of pioneering educators, academics, and sustainability experts. Together, they co-created the Ecovillage Design Education (EDE) Curriculum, which was officially launched in 2005. To host this educational initiative, Gaia Education was founded. - [Gaia Education Celebrates 20 Years of Regenerative Learning and Impact](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/105590-gaia-education-is-celebrating-our-20th) by Gaia Education (Mar 24, 2025): This year Gaia Education is celebrating our 20th anniversary, two full decades of sharing regenerative tools and practices and always learning more! 🌏In 1998 a group of passionate, active regenerative practitioners got together to discuss how to address the climate crises in a holistic way. From the movement of ecovillages that our partner GEN started, teachings were put together and the 4 Dimensional Framework came to fruition. A simple tool that could be applied to any setting to analyse, and learn holistically.  From where we started, the core of the organisation is still the same; everything is based around that holistic model of systemic thinking. Over the years we have added many new branches to the organisation; online courses, project based learning, Gaia Schools and youth courses, EU projects, SDG trainings and much more to try and reach as many groups as we can.  With the current state of the climate crises our work is crucial and we will be doing the work and continuing the movement of regenerative learning✨ Join our courses, and make an impact in your community.  - [Post 11-1: Interlinkages between SDG 11 and other SDGs explained](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/104218-post-11-1-interlinkages-between-sdg-11) by Gaia Education (Feb 21, 2025): As has been already discussed in some detail in one of the first posts on connections between SDGs, it is important to reiterate that addressing one SDG often advances progress on multiple others, reflecting the interconnected nature of the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, but can also hinder each other (so called trade-offs). The interdependence between the goals is crucial. For example, initiatives that promote clean energy (SDG 7) or clean water (SDG 6)  can also enhance climate action (SDG 13), reduce poverty (SDG 1) and increase health and well-being (SDG 3). This interconnected framework highlights the importance of coordinated and whole systems based and holistic efforts across sectors (and sometimes silos) to achieve sustainable progress, at times requiring new and innovative approaches and processes in order to break out of outdated modes of operating, planning, design and project development or implementation. . However, it is also important to consider the potential tradeoffs that can arise. For instance, prioritizing economic development (SDG 8) without addressing environmental sustainability (SDG 12) may lead to short-term gains but long-term challenges, affecting many other goals along its paths (like SDG 2, SDG 3, SDG, 13, SDG 14, SDG 15 etc). Understanding these tradeoffs is critical for creating strategies that balance immediate needs with future impacts. It is inherent in complex systems that sometimes small changes can create significant downstream effects, positive or negative, which need to be carefully considered and evaluated.  - [SDG 11 - Sustainable Cities and Communities explained](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/104217-sdg-11-sustainable-cities-and) by Gaia Education (Feb 19, 2025): What is SDG 11 about? Sustainable Development Goal 11 (SDG 11) is a global commitment to "make cities and human settlements inclusive, safe, resilient and sustainable". It covers a substantial and diverse variety of topics in relation to where and how people live including sustainable affordable housing, sustainable transport systems, integrative urban and settlement planning & management, protection of cultural and natural heritage, improved disaster preparedness & management, improved air quality, better waste and general environmental management, access to safe green spaces, improved regional development planning and increased climate adaptation & resilience, hence a pertinent topic everywhere due to the increased urbanisation seen in the world, but a topic for any community of any size everywhere.  Why does SDG 11 matter? Already since 2007 more than half the world’s population is living in cities, up from one-third in 1950, which is projected to increase to more than 60% by 2030 and to two-thirds by 2050.  The number of mega-cities has nearly tripled since 1990.   Continuing population growth and urbanisation are projected to add 2.5 billion people to the world’s urban population by 2050.  Just three countries — India, China and Nigeria – together are expected to account for 37 per cent of the projected growth of the world’s urban population between 2014 and 2050. India is projected to add 404 million urban dwellers, China 292 million and Nigeria 212 million.  The expected increase in urban land cover during the first three decades of the 21st century will be greater than the cumulative urban expansion in all of human history. The fastest growing urban populations also have the least access to services per capita: 279 million lack electricity 780 million lack safe drinking water 2.5 billion lack basic sanitation - [SDG 10: Reduced Inequalities explained](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/104098-sdg-10-reduced-inequalities-explained) by Saskia Rodrigues (Feb 11, 2025): What is SDG 10 about? Sustainable Development Goal 10 (SDG 10) is a global commitment to "reduce inequality within and among countries". It covers a substantial and diverse variety of topics such as reducing inequalities within and between countries, ensure equal opportunities for all, support of social, economic and political inclusion, increase income for poorer populations, ensure self-empowerment for all people, increase participation and decision making influence of developing countries in international economic and financial institutions, rules and regulations towards secure and safe migration and more. It is to tackle existing inequalities and unequal opportunities due to income, gender, age, disabilities, sexual orientation, race, class, ethnicity or religion and is therefore a pertinent topic everywhere.  - [SDG 9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure explained](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/104093-sdg-9-industry-innovation-and) by Gaia Education (Feb 9, 2025): SDG post #9 - SDG 9  Build resilient infrastructure, promote inclusive and sustainable industrialisation and foster innovation Hi #sustainability champions, today we continue our  journey exploring the individual SDGs one by one to polish our knowledge and upskill in SDG learning. What is SDG 8 about? Sustainable Development Goal 8 (SDG 8) is a global commitment to "promote sustained, inclusive and sustainable growth, full and productive employment and decent work for all". It covers a substantial and diverse variety of topics such as economic development, labour productivity, informal employment, earnings (including the gender pay gap), workplace conditions (including safety and security), unemployment, youth not in education, employment or training, forced labor, modern slavery and human trafficking, child labour and occupational injuries, but also about resources efficiency in production and consumption, sustainable tourism, and more. - [Get 10% Off Any Payment Towards Graduate Degrees in Design for Sustainability](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/103615-get-10-off-any-payment-towards-graduate) by Gaia Education (Jan 28, 2025) - [SDG 7 - Affordable and Clean Energy explained](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/103563-sdg-7-affordable-and-clean-energy) by Gaia Education (Jan 28, 2025): What is SDG 7 about? Sustainable Development Goal 7 (SDG 7) is a global commitment to " ensure access to affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all". It’s about significantly increasing renewable energy, double energy efficiency, expanding modern energy infrastructure, providing energy services to developing countries, enhancing R & D for modern energy, and more. Why does SDG 7 matter? SDG7 calls for “affordable, reliable, sustainable and modern energy for all” by 2030. It’s three core targets are the foundation for getting there: Ensure universal access to affordable, reliable and modern energy services Increase substantially the share of renewable energy in the global energy mix Double the global rate of improvement in energy efficiency From job creation to economic development (SDG 8), from security concerns (SDG 16) to the full empowerment of women (SDG 5) as well as poverty (SDG 1) and health and wellbeing (SDG 3), energy is part of the engine of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).  Globally, the number of people without access to electricity declined from 1.14 billion in 2010 to 675 million in 2021. Asia was the major driver of this decline, as the deficit there shrank from 516 million in 2010 to 69 million in 2021. Meanwhile, Africa saw only a marginal reduction of its unelectrified population, from 591 million to 586 million during the same period, influenced by its rapidly increasing population. The 2023 Tracking SDG7 Report estimates 660 million people would still lack access in 2030, most of them in Sub-Saharan Africa. At the same time, some 2.3 billion people remained without access to clean cooking in 2021, one third of the global population. Largely stagnant progress since 2010 leads to millions of deaths each year from breathing cooking smoke and many illnesses and prevents good health.  The global access deficit decreased from 36% to 26% since 2015. However, current trends suggest a 21% shortfall in achieving universal access by 2030, leaving 1.8 billion without access to clean cooking by 2030. Energy is the dominant contributor to climate change, accounting for around 60 per cent of total global greenhouse gas emissions. Since 1990, global emissions of CO2 have increased by more than 46 per cent and are still increasing to date. Hydropower is the largest single renewable electricity source today, providing 16% of world electricity at competitive prices. It dominates the electricity mix in several countries, developed, emerging or developing. In 2021 the global share of renewable sources in total final energy consumption stood at 18.7%. Excluding traditional use of biomass, the share of modern renewable sources rose gradually from 10% in 2015 to 12.5% in 2021. The electricity sector led the charge with renewables, contributing 28.2% to total final electricity consumption. However, insufficient progress in the heat and transport sectors underscores the need for stronger conservation measures and policy actions. Tripling world’s installed renewable energy generation agreed at the COP28 would be an important step aligning with the SDG7. Bioenergy is the single largest renewable energy source today, providing 10% of world 's primary energy supply. In 2021, the primary energy intensity improved by 0.8%, falling below both the 1.2% five-year average and the SDG 7 target of 2.6%. To meet the 2030 target, annual improvements must now average around 4%. The robust economic recovery in 2021 led to the largest annual rise in energy consumption in 50 years, exceeding 5%. This surge was driven by a shift towards energy intensive industries and the resurgence of other demand sectors after lockdowns were lifted. In 2022, international public financial flows supporting clean energy in developing countries has increased but falls way short of what is needed to reach the targets in 2030, by at least 50%, particularly in least developed countries. At the same time the share into fossil fuels is still very significant and appears to continue largely unabated.  Installed renewable energy capacity is on its rise by about 8% annually, however so far has not achieved any decline in energy consumption or in greenhouse gas emissions on a global scale, as seen with still occurring installation of fossil fuel based infrastructure (e.g. new coal power plants). - [SDG 6 - Clean water and sanitation](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/103562-sdg-6-clean-water-and-sanitation) by Gaia Education (Jan 27, 2025): What is SDG 6 about? Sustainable Development Goal 6 (SDG 6) is a global commitment to "ensure availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all". It’s about making available sustainable water supply and sanitation for all, provide access to clean and affordable drinking water, use water more efficiently, stop water pollution and increase water quality worldwide, protect and appropriately manage mountains, forests, wetlands, rivers, lakes and rivers, and more. Why does SDG 6 matter? The availability of clean water and accessible sustainable sanitation is extremely important because it is tightly connected with and related to so many other fundamental SDGs like health and wellbeing, hunger, poverty, education and much more.  It is a basis which leads to healthier people, families, better economies, and more sustainable and peaceful societies. Achieving clean water and sanitation is crucial to realising many of the SDGs - after all you cannot expect to achieve any global goal if a third of the world’s population does not even have access to hygienic and clean sanitary facilities or have to drink water of poor quality. SDG 6 looks at all dimensions of the water cycle in human populations and habitats and protects the health of people and the planet alike.  Drinking unsafe water impairs health through illnesses such as diarrhoea, and untreated excreta contaminates groundwater and surface waters used for drinking-water, irrigation, bathing and household purposes.  Chemical contamination of water continues to pose a health burden, whether natural in origin such as arsenic and fluoride, or anthropogenic such as nitrate or pesticides. - [SDG 5: Gender Equality](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/103445-sdg-5-gender-equality-explained) by Gaia Education (Jan 23, 2025): What is SDG 5 about? Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5) is a global commitment to "achieve gender equality and empower women and girls." It’s about ending discrimination, violence, and harmful practices against women and girls, recognising and valuing unpaid care, ensuring women’s participation in leadership, providing access to reproductive health, and more. Why does SDG 5 matter? Gender equality is super important because when women and girls get the same opportunities as men and boys, everyone benefits. It leads to healthier families, better economies, and more sustainable and peaceful societies. Achieving gender equality is crucial to realising many of the SDGs - after all you cannot expect to achieve any global goal if half the world’s population is not fully empowered. SDG 5 looks at all dimensions of gender equality and empowering all women and girls. Women’s rights are basic human rights that all women and girls have. But in practice, these rights are often not protected to the same extent as the rights of men. We are still far away from reaching gender equality in economic, political, public and private lives of women and girls.  Among others, women’s rights include: physical integrity rights, such as being free from violence and making choices over their own body; social rights, such as going to school and participating in public life; economic rights, such as owning property, working a job of their choice, and being paid equally for it; and political rights, such as voting for and holding public office. - [SDG 4 - Quality Education Explained](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/103441-sdg-4-quality-education) by Gaia Education (Jan 20, 2025): What is SDG 4? Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG 4) is a global commitment to "ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and promote lifelong learning opportunities for all." It's a vision to transform lives through education, recognizing the fundamental role it plays in creating a sustainable, prosperous, and equitable world. Why does SDG 4 Matter?  Education is more than literacy and numeracy; it's a key driver of sustainable development. It empowers individuals, reduces inequalities, promotes gender equality, and fosters peace and is the foundation for future development of societies. In essence, SDG 4 is the cornerstone for improving people's lives and shaping a better future for all, directly related to SDG 1, SDG 2, SDG 3, and SDG 8 and many others. . The world has gone through a dramatic transition over the last few centuries, from one where very few had any basic education to one where the majority of people do. This is not only reflected in the inputs to education – enrolment and attendance – but also in outcomes, where literacy rates have greatly improved. Getting children into school is also not enough. What they learn matters. There are large differences in educational outcomes: in low-income countries, most children cannot read by the end of primary school (>80%). These inequalities in education exacerbate poverty and existing inequalities in global development. Hence the quality of education counts.  - [SDG 3 - Good health and wellbeing explained](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/103256-sdg-3-good-health-and-wellbeing) by Gaia Education (Jan 16, 2025): What is SDG 3? SDG 3 aims to ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages. It focuses on various aspects of health, from reducing mortality rates to combating diseases and ensuring universal health coverage. Why does it matter?  Good health and well-being are essential for sustainable development and are of great concern in any country. A healthier population lives longer, is more productive, and can participate more. Challenges like non-communicable diseases, mental health, but also substance abuse or exposure to chemicals, and global health risks like pandemics highlight the need for strong, high quality, accessible and affordable health systems.  Achieving SDG 3 is crucial because as for example the WHO defines it as ‘"Health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity."; it's about ensuring that all people have continuous access to a high quality health system, which supports their physical, mental, emotional and social  health and wellbeing in all stages of life. This is the fundamental goal to human well-being and is a crucial building block for other SDGs.  Hence it is clear that healthy lives of wellbeing for all ages  is a multifaceted and multidimensional complex issue from the global to the local and affects each and everyone of us and is about prevention, treatment as well as management of sickness, disease and health issues. In this very large and complex SDG the number and trends of mortality (with emphasis on maternal and young children) are very often cited. Historical trends show us there have been significant increases in global life expectancy over the last two centuries, reflecting improvements around the world. Notably, poorer countries have made considerable progress, which has helped reduce the global disparity in life expectancy. But substantial gaps remain, with life expectancies in some Sub-Saharan African countries below 60 years, in contrast to over 80 years in several European countries and Japan. Despite these advancements, disparities persist — child mortality rates in low-income countries are substantially higher than those in high-income countries. This pattern extends to other health measures, including disease burden estimates, indicating ongoing global health challenges. A growing body of research highlights the effectiveness of healthcare investments in improving health outcomes. Evidence shows that health outcomes respond positively to increased healthcare spending, particularly at lower levels of expenditure, something which is particularly the case again for sub-saharan African countries, which fare the worst in many health related outcomes.  Nevertheless, also as an outcome of the COVID pandemic a number of health related indicators are going backwards or stagnating (e.g. maternal mortality),  show marginal progress only if at all  (e.g. communicable disease, reproductive health or mental health), moderate progress (e.g. child mortality, immunisation coverage) all of which would need significant acceleration if the SDG 3 targets should be reached by 2030, particularly in the lowest income countries, where health care coverage is weak, a target which is also stagnating. But similarly other indicators also affect all countries, like non-communicable disease, mental health, substance abuse, traffic accidents, pollution and providing for a healthy workforce are either stagnating or have at best moderate progress, all far insufficient to reach the targets by 2030.   - [SDG 2 - Zero Hunger explained](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/103168-sdg-2-zero-hunger-explained) by Rafael Antunes (Jan 13, 2025): Let’s explore Sustainable Development Goal 2 (SDG 2), also known as  "Zero Hunger" in a concise manner suitable for learning. SDG 2 is one of the 17 goals established by the UN to create a sustainable future. It specifically aims to end hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture by 2030. - [SDG 1 - End poverty in all it's forms everywhere ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/103087-sdg-1-end-poverty-in-all-its-forms) by Gaia Education (Jan 4, 2025): What is SDG 1? SDG 1 is one of the 17 goals established by the UN to create a sustainable future. It specifically aims to end poverty in all its forms (especially extreme poverty), protect people against poverty and make access to resources available for all by 2030. Why SDG 1 Matters: Poverty is a complex issue, varying across contexts. Approximately 8.5% of the global population (700 million people) lives in extreme poverty, surviving on less than $2.15/day. Despite significant progress—global poverty dropped from 2 billion people in 1990—current trends indicate over 500 million may remain in extreme poverty by 2030. The COVID-19 pandemic further exacerbated this issue, pushing an additional 70–90 million into poverty. Definitions of poverty differ globally, with national poverty lines reflecting local income levels. For example, the U.S. sets its poverty line at $24.55/day, while Ethiopia's is $2.04/day. The International Poverty Line ($2.15/day) provides a consistent, though minimal, global benchmark. - [Sustainable Development Goals - It is all connected!](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/102893-sustainable-development-goals-it-is-all) by Gaia Education (Dec 24, 2024): SDGs interconnectedness explained Hi #sustainability champions, we continue our journey through the Agenda 2030 and 17 Sustainable Development Goals to polish our knowledge and upskill in SDG learning. We’ll be posting one SDG goal approximately once or twice weekly until we have gone through all 17 SDGs. The concept is imagined with a butterfly flapping its wings in the Amazon Forest and causing a typhoon in the Pacific🦋 A metaphor, which reflects our experiences and knowledge that often very minor things can change outcomes significantly (and also supported by the concepts of quantum physics).  And suffice to say, that all our lives are immersed and part of many complex systems (and systems, within systems, within systems, …) be it our natural world, our social and economic systems, all the way down to our family system and of course even our own body. Most importantly we all know that they are not isolated and independent, but tightly connected and interdependent at every level. Even though humans often try to divide and separate (and often simplify) many systems into silos (examples are governance structures and institutions) in order to cope with the sheer complexity of issues, but very often losing the connections and interrelations by doing so, leading to limited, unhelpful or even harmful decisions and effects. Obviously, an economic system purely focused on growth and profits, is in a sense systems blind, reductionist and way too simplistic to achieve what it should be intended to achieve, causing many degenerative outcomes in its path, something we all should be well aware of.  - [Empowering Youth Through Participatory Innovation](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/102686-empowering-youth-through-participatory) by Rafael Antunes (Dec 19, 2024): 💡 What does it take to empower youth as changemakers in their communities? The aim is to deepen public comprehension of soil dynamics, establishing a connection between individuals and soil using hands-on experiences.  Through the CurioSoil Community of Practice platform (CoP) we gather stakeholders from diverse backgrounds to come together and contribute to the development, piloting and implementation of soil education initiatives. The CoP coordinates efforts across 17 countries, bringing together relevant experts and organisations to achieve common objectives.  - [What is "Systems Thinking"?](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/102189-what-is-systems-thinking) by Rafael Antunes (Nov 27, 2024): Felicia Chavez, instructor of Gaia Education's Systems Thinking for Real-World Change course, introduces us to a framework for 'thinking about systems thinking.' This framework highlights three key perspectives that define the challenging and often surprising world of systems thinking. - [🌀Creating Sustainable Designs with a Whole-Systems Approach](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/101931-creating-sustainable-designs-with-a) by Gaia Education (Nov 18, 2024): To design sustainably, we must recognise the interconnectedness of both challenges and solutions. This is where a whole-systems approach comes in—it takes a comprehensive look at all elements of a system and their interactions to create efficient, sustainable outcomes. What is a System? A system is best described as: “a collection of subjects or elements that have a relationship among themselves.” These relationships form patterns and processes that facilitate the exchange of resources, energy, or information between elements. However, systems don't operate in isolation. They are part of larger systems, can relate to other systems, and often have subsystems within them. Each system has its own unique identity, history, and dynamics. Why Take a Whole-Systems Approach? A whole-systems strategy focuses on fostering harmonious relationships between all components of a system. Think of it like assembling a puzzle—each piece works together to form a cohesive and efficient whole, rather than existing independently. By viewing everything holistically, we gain a deeper understanding of how different parts are interconnected and can better identify sustainable solutions. - [A FREE Systems Thinking toolkit to help you navigate these complex times!](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/101907-free-systems-thinking-toolkit) by Rafael Antunes (Nov 12, 2024): We have created a Systems Thinking toolkit that provides the insights, strategies, and tools needed to cultivate a more holistic approach, empowering you to tackle complex issues effectively. Whether your goal is to support your community, address environmental issues, or drive social change, this toolkit will equip you to take action that truly makes a difference. - [To honour the memory and work of Jane Rasbash at Gaia Education](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/101674-to-honour-the-memory-and-work-of-jane) by Gaia Education (Oct 31, 2024): It’s with a heavy heart that we regret to inform you that Jane Rasbash, our colleague passed away today (31 October 2024), exactly on the day of her birthday. Jane has been an active member of Gaia Education, serving on the board of trustees as well as on the management team in recent years. Before that, she and Pracha Hutanuwatra were vital contributors to the development of our Ecovillage Design Education curriculum, sourced from their pioneering work in Mindful Facilitation.  Jane developed and managed several projects at Gaia Education, represented the organisation on many occasions, and was a brilliant trainer, facilitator and counsellor to the entire organisation and our partners. She was a ferocious advocate for the need for a global Worldview shift to ‘decolonise’ our mindsets, and advocated for community-led change across the globe. On this difficult time for family and friends, we want to honour Jane and open a space for all to come together and celebrate her life and impact on the world. Jane helped Gaia Education and the Global Ecovillage Network to become the organisations we know today and her legacy will stand for many years to come. We have opened free space below to share your condolences, and invite all of Gaia Education's friends and partners to write. The writings will be shared afterwards with Jane’s family and friends.  - [How food connects us to Earth 🍌 Conscious Food Systems Alliance Case studies ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/101668-how-food-connects-us-to-earth-conscious) by Gaia Education (Oct 31, 2024): Conscious Food Systems Alliance has put together a collection of case studies that showcase exemplary practises in conscious and regenerative food systems. And we at Gaia Education are so proud to be a part of it! 🍉Food connects us fundamentally with the Earth and with one another and the Conscious Food systems alliance wants to help people connect to nature again through eating and the food that sustains us. This in return can help us alleviate and solve dysfunctional food systems; hunger, obesity epidemics, legislative issues of farmers, biodiversity loss and extractive production practices 🌎 Indigenous and traditional wisdom have embraced these holistic, aware food systems for millennia and it is time for the modern world to embrace ancient knowledge 🧿 Gaia Education has been acknowledged as nurturing regenerative lifestyles worldwide through holistic Ecovillage design. The roots of Gaia Education started at the Findhorn ecovillage where the general ethos is honouring nature and working with it in regards to all aspects of our lives. Permaculture methods are used throughout the village to produce food that helps the Earth to regenerate while nourishing the people who live on it. The community also offers an opportunity to get together daily for joint meals and connect with each other.  - [What is regenerative literacy?](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/101274-what-is-regenerative-literacy) by Gaia Education (Oct 14, 2024): When you have the understanding and the words to describe something, you can become more engaged with it. Eco- or regenerative literacy is integral in helping us understand our environment while developing intrinsic regenerative values and the skills needed to maintain in harmony with nature.  It goes beyond sustainability by focusing on restoring, renewing, and enhancing the natural environment, human communities, and their interactions with one another. Imagine if our farms didn’t just produce food but also rebuilt soil health. Imagine if our buildings didn’t just use less energy but actually contributed to the vitality of the surrounding environment. This is the vision of a regenerative future, and regenerative literacy is the key to making it happen. Regenerative literacy is more than just understanding how to protect the planet—it’s about learning how to heal it. - [UN's Pact for the Future](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/101190-uns-pact-for-the-future) by Gaia Education (Oct 8, 2024): The world is at a pivotal moment, and the leaders have responded by adopting a historic "Pact for the Future" during the recent UN Summit of the Future in New York at the end of last month. This pact could be the key to unlocking a brighter, more sustainable future—but it won’t happen unless we take action. Our house is on fire—climate change, resource conflicts, and economic instability are pushing us to the brink. We cannot afford to delay any longer. The choices we make now will determine the world we leave for future generations. The Pact for the Future addresses these challenges in several key ways: 1️⃣ Renewing Multilateralism: It lays the groundwork for a much-needed reform of global governance, including potential changes to the UN Security Council. Stronger global cooperation is essential to tackle the crises we face. 2️⃣ Reaffirming the SDGs and Paris Agreement: The pact urges the world to increase the pace of the green transition and double down on our commitment to the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). - [What happens when you shift the power dynamics of pedagogy?](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/100870-what-happens-when-you-shift-the-power) by Gaia Education (Sep 23, 2024): Pedagogy: from the middle French (16th century), from Latin paedagogia, ‘education, attendance on boys’, from paidagogos ‘teacher’. Challenging Assumptions in Education Our current educational systems have many dominating core assumptions that are so deeply entrenched in us that we are rarely even aware of their existence. The assumptions include the belief that Knowledge is fixed and must be transmitted within subject-specific silos by an “expert” teacher. The intellect is the only legitimate faculty for learning. Learning is an individual and competitive process, where collaboration is seen as "cheating." However, there is a wave of alternative thinking that challenges these beliefs and that embraces collaboration and mutual learning.  The Role of Power in Learning In his book Pedagogy of the Oppressed, the Brazilian thinker and educator Paulo Freire explored the power dynamics that shape our learning experiences and determine what is accepted as objective truth. Building on Freire's insights, we can understand that the language we use to interpret the world is not a neutral representation of reality. Instead, it reflects the structural power relations embedded within society. The idea of "objective truth" is, in fact, a social construct. Seen in this light, the centre of authority needs to shift from the teacher to the learning community, with the role of the educator being ‘to draw out from’, recast as a resource, mentor, provocateur and, in some sense, peer rather than only a transmitter of information. Gaia Education curriculum and methods were heavily influenced by this shift of roles which is why we often refer to facilitators as the guides of our courses. Rather than embarking information, they are there to facilitate conversations and mutual learning.  Decolonizing Education Throughout history, education has often been used as weapon in colonisation and for example Universidad de la Tierra, or Unitierra, in Oaxaca, Mexico, was created in response to a belief that ‘[t]he school has been the main tool of the State to destroy the Indigenous people’ The validation of the subjective that this entails brings the classroom back to life. Students are no longer required to park their emotions, intuition and bodies at the classroom door. Rather, they are invited into a space that welcomes their creativity and playfulness, their passions and their tears. The student’s role shifts from that of object to be operated on to a subject within relationships. A Holistic Approach to Education An example of this more holistic approach is found at Schumacher College in Devon, England, were students and staff work side by side and grow food, cook, wash dishes, clean and maintain the buildings - all while engaging in the more "heady" subjects.  A growing number of studies and surveys of innovative educational initiatives are finding that this more holistic approach to education – one that stimulates ‘head, heart and hands’ – is significantly more effective in catalysing behaviour change and enabling students to engage critically and creatively with the values, skills, and knowledge requirements of the sustainability-related challenges we face. The competitive, hyper-rational ideal of many current systems has left us bereft of meaning while the Earth burns🌎 A recasting of the form and purpose of learning is a powerful place to start.  - [Latest from Global sustainable development with Scottish International Alliance](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/100567-scottish-international-alliance-annual) by Gaia Education (Sep 9, 2024): One of the central themes of the conference was the vital need to democratise decision-making processes further even in systems already considered as 'democratic'. By involving the public more in these processes, we can work towards a more just and balanced system. However, there is often a gap between the promising parameters of policies and their practical implementation. This discrepancy highlights the challenge of translating well-intentioned policies into effective action. A recurring topic of discussion was the apparent contradiction between governmental statements and actions. While many governments advocate for peace, substantial portions of public funds continue to support ongoing conflicts. This raises important questions about transparency in the use of taxpayer money. Can we demand greater accountability, and if so, how can we achieve this? - [Connecting and Co-Creating: Reflections from the GEN Europe Ecovillage Gathering at Ängsbacka](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/100422-gen-europe-gathering) by Gaia Education (Sep 2, 2024): Connection is everything✨ Cultural creativity was abundant in dance, in art and crafts and play sessions, in the rituals throughout the event, in the singing, and music. Transcending all language issues, these activities allowed strangers to connect on a deeper level than in words, and by the end, with all we had been through, there was an intimate sense of community much more deeply felt than at the start of the gathering. Once bonded, how do we communities take action for change together? - [Cultivating an education as if people and planet mattered](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/99959-cultivating-an-education-as-if-people) by Jonathan Dawson (Aug 20, 2024): The seeds of a revolution in how we conceive of educate is upon us.   It is all too easy to despair in the face of the inertia in our various systems that stifles the kind of changes that we so urgently need to respond to the crises facing us. This is true not least in the field of education. Standardised global curricula that pay little heed to cultural and geographic distinctiveness. Lessons that engage the intellect but that park emotions and the body at the classroom door. Teachers trying – largely in vain – to transfer knowledge to passive and bored students, all the while overworked and oppressed by the ever-growing demands of testing culture. This is an education that, in the words of American educator, David Orr, ‘can equip people merely to be more effective vandals of the earth’. - [Design for Resilience: Meet our Resilience Master!](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/99917-design-for-resilience-meet-our) by Rafael Antunes (Aug 16, 2024) - [CURIOSOIL: The new website is live!](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/99679-curiosoil-the-new-website-is-live) by Rafael Antunes (Aug 2, 2024): The CURIOSOIL initiative is designed to enhance soil education and address the growing need for a better understanding of soil amid increasing human pressures on this essential resource. Across diverse cultures and civilisations, oral traditions have played a central role in preserving cultural heritage, transmitting knowledge, and fostering a sense of belonging and identity. From the epic poems of ancient civilisations to the folk tales passed down through generations, oral storytelling has been a sacred art, connecting individuals to their past, their community, and the natural world. Today, as we navigate the complex challenges of the 21st century, at the forefront being the ongoing ecological crisis, we find ourselves returning to the ancient practice of storytelling. Drawing inspiration from its timeless wisdom to create resilient, regenerative communities committed to regeneration and social justice. Storytelling is a powerful tool for fostering connection, inspiring action, and catalysing change within our communities. - [Join Us on May 25th for the Economic Dimension!](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/90160-economic-dimension) by Gaia Education (Mar 21, 2024) - [The Good and the Bad news: a book by Gaia Education board member Ross Jackson](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/95379-the-good-and-the-bad-news-a-book-by-our) by Saskia Rodrigues (Mar 19, 2024): In his latest book, Gaia Education board member and donor of many years Ross Jackson presents a provocative exploration of our civilisation's trajectory, challenging us to confront the stark reality of collapse while offering a compelling vision for a brighter future. It seems that there are no tools to draw the time, and you have no idea which steps to go through this place that remains alive, only in the imagination - a cloudy, untouched image. It'll take a big rubber to clear this cloudy sky. Rubber? Perhaps it makes the image even cloudier, with dark blurs, and smudges. I'm not sure how to clarify this image. I don't think anyone is quite sure how to lighten it, but the word has always been my time.  I write at this moment because I feel all the time. The time always seems inopportune, but the word makes me go anyway because there are no rules or fear when my fingers touch the leaf and let themselves be carried away. It's time. My time remains mine.  It seems that the time is the journey. Sometimes, I insist on not using it so much in speech to avoid the imminent danger of other people's ears - something that is part of my particular development process, because we are all in time of learning - but in the construction of an image, the word has no fear - or doesn't seem to, it just comes out. Proofreading is a craft, which is delicious after a short read - and I often ask myself after writing and reading what has come out of my fingers: who wrote that? This feeling that has always been pent up inside me has taken me down paths I never thought I would be able to travel, but the image was visible in my imagination, was action what was missing. And since life takes and brings what we seek, even without knowing it, - [Celebrating Female Voices: A Literary Tribute for International Women's Day](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/95266-celebrating-female-voices-a-literary) by Saskia Rodrigues (Mar 8, 2024): As we commemorate International Women's Day, let's shine a light on the extraordinary contributions of female authors to literature and society. What colors paint the horizon? What whispers stir in the breeze? In the depths of your soul, what truths do you hold dear? These are the threads that form the tapestry of your worldview—a mosaic of beliefs that shape your understanding of self and other. But how often do we pause to examine the origins of our worldview? Reflecting on our worldview is not just an intellectual exercise; it's a deeply emotive journey of self-discovery. It's about reconnecting with the rhythms of the natural world, recognising that we are not separate from it but rather integral parts of a vast, interconnected web of life. - [Unlocking the Future: Highlights from the Kick Off Meeting of the Horizon Project Curiosoil](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/95025-unlocking-the-future-highlights-from-the) by Gaia Education (Feb 23, 2024): We're excited to bring you the latest scoop on the Horizon Project Curiosoil, a visionary initiative to revolutionise soil education. This is concrete action that we can take in our immediate environment, you just need some knowledge and tools on how to get started.  Healthier ecosystems, with richer biodiversity, yield greater benefits such as more fertile soils and larger stores of greenhouse gases. It is also estimated that 60% of expected species extinctions could be avoided through the effective restoration of 15% of converted lands (source). Ecosystems can be restored at a very rapid pace if humans do not interfere with destructive practises that are largely used all over the world in different biomes. The sooner and quicker we do this, the faster it can turn into a movement to fight the destruction that is happening on a mass scale level. Look at this image below from Palk Bay, India and the speed of restoration when the land is left alone and some basic techniques are applied to help the growth.  - [Gaia Education has joined TikTok!](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/94222-gaia-education-has-joined-tiktok) by Saskia Rodrigues (Jan 23, 2024) - [Announcing a new EU project - CURIOSOIL](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/94025-announcing-a-new-eu-project) by Gaia Education (Jan 18, 2024): The primary aim of CurioSoil is to bring soil education to primary, secondary and tertiary levels across Europe. How long would it take to restore the carbon balance? My co-workers and I at the Global Village Institute for Appropriate Technology have done this calculation a number of different ways. The simple answer is that if everyone in the world planted one tree each day, by the end of the second year, the sequestered carbon would exceed current global industrial emissions. Atmospheric concentrations would begin to decline and return to normal. The principal obstacle is not lack of manpower, however, it’s the availability of land. Seven billion planters could plant the equivalent of global carbon dioxide emissions in two years, but they would use up all the fallow arable land in the world. Where do we send those tree planters after all the unused arable land is planted? Deserts cover a third of the earth’s surface. Climate change is causing deserts to expand at an accelerating pace; and yet, what is true about desertification affecting climate is also true about de-desertification. - [The EDE adventure continued in France for the second successive year!](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/76966-the-ede-adventure-continued-in-france) by Gaia Education (Dec 28, 2022): In October 2022, 25 participants gathered in the ecovillage Sainte-Camelle to explore community living and a regenerative lifestyle – a deep, transformative, joyful and rich experience, at the heart of Life! As an EDE team, we took this opportunity for a second edition to strengthen the foundations of the program in a French context and to take further steps towards enriching this transformative experience aiming for a regenerative culture. The list of highlights and learnings is vast but we choose to extract 4 precious stones to share with you: ● The power of the matrix One of the focuses in our EDE’s preparation was to bring more consistency in the skeleton of the program: What is the red thread of this EDE? What is the participant’s journey? On top of the EDE curriculum, we brought different systems together like: the CLIPS model, Dragon Dreaming, Work that reconnects, The Medicine Wheel, the seasons and elements, and to design what we called the Miro’s journey; our main frame (“miro/miraud” in french means somebody who does not see well, so it’s for us, the journey to open our eyes … to Life). It involved 4 main steps: Me and You, Me and Us, Us and the World, and At the heart of Life. This frame helped us to place the different EDE’s modules in our program with more structure and coherency and to design a clearer container for us, participants and speakers. In co-creation and co-facilitation with participants, we opened and closed each week with meditation and activities in connection with the week’s intention; element and keywords. It helps us to walk together, hand in hand, through each step of the journey. - [Principles and Practices of Deep Transformation](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/77086-principles-and-practices-of-deep) by Gaia Education (Dec 23, 2022): he only way we can truly change our trajectory is by approaching society’s problems from the foundation of an alternative worldview—one that affirms life, rather than the accumulation of wealth above all else. This worldview already exists: it is one of deep interconnectedness, which integrates the findings of modern systems thinking, evolutionary biology, and cognitive neuroscience with insights from Buddhism, Taoism, and Indigenous knowledge. Ultimately, this worldview could serve as the basis for a fundamentally different type of society: an ecological civilization. - [Reflections on CoP27](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/77037-reflections-on-cop27) by Gaia Education (Dec 13, 2022): Now that a bit of dust has settled on the frenetic networking and deal-making of COP27, the Gaia Education COP delegation team, Fasil Bogale (CFO) and Tim Clarke (Trustee), have had time to reflect on the successes and challenges of the event. They are also asking themselves how, if at all, Gaia Education should continue to interact with COP in the coming years. Why did Gaia Education go to COP this year? Many NGOs in our networks decided not to go to COP this year, deeply frustrated at the lack of progress on all the Declarations and Agreements of previous years, and wary of coping with the security, visa restrictions and high costs imposed by the hosts – the Egyptian authorities. For Gaia Education, we were particularly disappointed that the Joint Ministerial Declaration made by Ministers of Education and Environment at COP 26, committing to ‘The integration of sustainability and climate change in formal education systems’ did not seem to have galvanised any concrete response in the lead up to COP27. However, we had taken the declaration seriously, and in 2022 we had formed a consortium with the Association of African Universities, the All Africa Students’ Union and the SDG Center for Africa to create an SDG and Climate Change Digital Short Course programme for all African university students, signposting them to different avenues of action on the ground. - [Sustainability educators guiding youth to Regenerative Futures ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/76039-sustainability-educators-towards) by Gaia Education (Dec 13, 2022): In July, the team from Gaia YES! In essence, we promote thriving communities within planetary boundaries. We offer courses, both short and long (a few hours to 8 months), in the holistic design of liveable, sustainable communities, both face-to-face in over 55 countries and online in three languages. In addition, some in-depth specialised courses have been developed together with partners on specific topics. Teaching projects, normally in developing countries, are also carried out regularly in cooperation with aid agencies and local partners. We call this “Project Based Learning”. In recent years, we carried out such projects in India, Bangladesh, Senegal, Zambia and Italy (with refugees and climate immigrants from abroad). - [Do you know where your water comes from and how it is treated?](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/76747-do-you-know-where-your-water-comes-from) by Gaia Education (Dec 2, 2022): When we understand how the water cycle works, the next step into designing appropriate water systems should be to take a close look at the water budget for the building, community and bioregion. Even if you are only designing a single house in your community, to integrate your design appropriately into its landscape you will have to pay attention to water flows at the community and regional scale. Brock also emphasises the whole-systems ecological approach to dealing with climate change. We have polluted and degraded the biosphere to the extent that climate-change phenomena can clearly be seen to be the symptoms of stressed planetary systems trying to deal with the excess heat, trying to rebalance and return to the dynamic equilibrium of the Holocene. We can enable the Earth to do its work of regeneration when we see ourselves and our communities as part of the bigger picture, starting with our watershed. Compacted agricultural fields with no permanent ground cover, no hedgerows and trees stop rainfall from filtering into the ground and washing away soil with runoff. In cities, rainwater is regarded as a problem and channeled away as quickly as possible through the sewerage system. Impermeable surfaces reduce water filtration into the ground and add to pollution of water as runoff picks up the heavy metal residues left by fossil fuel exhausts. In many places rain falls in seasons, yet rainwater is not retained and stored in the landscape but is allowed to rush off to rivers and back into the sea. For sustainable watershed management at local and regional scale, we need water to be retained for use throughout the year. Instead of piping wastewater long distances for centralized treatment, we could regenerate water quality locally in smaller, more decentralized and resilient waste management systems. We should minimize pollution and recycle water locally. Hydro-electric plants, especially mega-dams, cause considerable damage to riverine ecosystems and in some countries, dams are already being dismantled as part of watershed restoration projects. The diagram below shows a schematic watershed with a river and its tributaries rising in the hills around it. The contours of the hills have been added. When the hillsides are bare of vegetation, the water will run downhill as quickly as possible, following the path of least resistance, taking soil with it and causing erosion. - [Macaco Tamerice - a certified Gaia Education trainer](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/76729-meet-macaco-tamerice-a-certified-gaia) by Gaia Education (Dec 1, 2022): How have you been involved with Gaia Education over the years? I have been involved with Gaia education since 2009, when I did my first EDE (Ecovillage Design Education programme) at Sieben Linden in Germany, thanks to my friend Kosha Joubert. It really was a life changing experience for me and since 2011 I have been organising and teaching EDEs in Damanhur and other places in the world as well as developing an online version of the live EDE together with my friend Taisa Mattos from Brazil. I have been also teaching ToTs (Training of Trainers) and recently I'm working with Gaia education as an EDE and ToT in person consultant. What’s your biggest motivation for working with the Gaia curriculum? My biggest motivation in working with the Gaia curriculum is its power of transformation. In over 12 years of working with it I have seen how powerfully it impacts people's lives. It offers so many practical tools that together with the personal and group building processes creates a beautiful and life changing learning adventure. It is together full of new knowledge and very exciting in every minute. I truly believe that this education can have a meaningful impact in transforming the world we live in into a regenerative future. Can you tell us a bit about the projects you do outside of Gaia Education? I have been involved with the global Ecovillage Network since 2007 and held many different roles from being the president of GEN-Europe for several years to being part of the new Network Steward Circle. Together with my friend Ousmane Ali Pame from Senegal we started the first twinship between an Ecovillage in the global north and in the global south and in the last 2 years I have been coaching online a group of woman in leadership and conflict resolution in the refugee camp Kakuma in Kenia. At the moment I'm coaching a group of people from the camp to create an Ecovillage in Kakuma. Kadjosi Matabishi president of the association Des, living in the refugee camp, has participated in the first online EDE and sharing with others about what he experienced  and learned created a  group to transform the harsh reality of the camp into a new reality with perspective. - [Planting Seeds For A Regenerative Future, a conversation with Vandana Shiva](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/76533-planting-seeds-for-a-regenerative-future) by Gaia Education (Nov 19, 2022): Vandana Shiva is an Indian scholar, environmental activist, food sovereignty advocate, ecofeminist and anti-globalisation author.  An Indian physicist and social activist, shiva founded the Research Foundation for Science, Technology, and Natural Resource Policy (RFSTN), an organization devoted to developing sustainable methods of agriculture, in 1982. Shiva has a long history of working on grassroots campaigns to prevent clear-cut logging and the construction of large dams. She's widely known, however, as a critic of Asia’s Green Revolution, an international effort that began in the 1960s to increase food production in less-developed countries through higher-yielding seed stocks and the increased use of pesticides and fertilizers. The Green Revolution, she maintains, leads to pollution, a loss of indigenous seed diversity and traditional agricultural knowledge, and the troubling dependence of poor farmers on costly chemicals. - [Gaia Education new Course with Della Duncan and Silvia Di Blasio](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/76460-gaia-education-new-course-with-della) by Gaia Education (Nov 16, 2022): All of us need to make a livelihood, but how do we create work that we love, that supports our families and us while also contributing meaningfully to the world and our communities? When we start thinking of our livelihood as a service to the regeneration and development of societies and the planet, it enables us to dream and envision completely new possibilities for ourselves and an ecological future.  What is the middle point where our passions, gifts, natural talents and purpose lie? How can we find deeper meaning in our work? Starting to explore these types of questions is crucial for changing the existing economic paradigm of continuous financial growth. When we start to address how we can live and work with purpose, we start slowly shifting into a regenerative mindset that will benefit the planet.  We are proud to introduce to you our new online course - "Cultivating regenerative livelihoods", co-created by Della Duncan and Silvia DiBlasio. This course will dive deep into exploring the purpose of your work life and allow you to connect with what's important to you. It will help you move into a balanced space of working with your passions whilst living in better harmony with the planet.  Course starts on 16th January, sign up now to guarantee a spot! - [Why is transformative learning crucial in a global crisis? ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/75805-what-is-an-ede-designers-and-why-is) by Gaia Education (Oct 28, 2022): "Transformative learning is all about unfolding your human potential because your creative potential comes out in the moments when you feel at ease and centred and when you feel like what you're doing matters." Gaia Kool is a community school, our parents, children and teachers form a community where everybody has a role of the teacher and a student, we learn from each other. We believe that the school cannot exist apart from everyday life and is not a separate institution but it needs to be a comfortable environment for both teachers and students in order to learn together through experience and shared knowledge. There are class teachers for every class and subject teachers for foreign languages such as English and Russian, Handicraft and Technologies, Art, also Physical education and Music. We offer different kinds of experimental subjects for kids such as Self-expression, Drama and acting, and Yoga. One week of the seven week learning period is so called project week during which the children either visit some places connected to their current study topic or stay at home and get involved with their own personal project. Usually it takes about the month to finish the project, after that the students will present it to others and then choose another topic and start with a new project.   - [An EDE course inspires an animators imagination to share alternative futures ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/75141-how-an-ede-sparks-an-animators) by Gaia Education (Oct 3, 2022): At the EDE course, I realised what was needed, more than exposing the dark strings that manage our societies was showing.... a new one was being born. - [Discover a free university, grounding Brazilian youth in regenerative & transformative education ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/75029-discover-a-free-university-regenerative) by Gaia Education (Sep 26, 2022): Find out how this free, sustainable, transformative educational facility helps youth to appropriate who they are in the world, giving them a deeper sense of self and grounding, laying the foundation to transform themselves and their communities. - [How can I save the planet?](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/74590-how-can-i-save-the-planet) by Gaia Education (Sep 7, 2022): Without trying to be a bit of a know-it-all here, the planet really does not need us to be saved. The planet is the molten rock with a thin peel around. This planet will be around until the sun explodes. That will take another 4.6 billion years.  The question is, however, understandable because we all realise that planet Earth is our home, and we all know what the overwhelming majority of sane scientists are telling us: our planet’s Climate is overheating, its biodiversity is decreasing rapidly, its surfaces and ecosystems are being swamped in plastics and pollutants, and we are changing the chemistry of our oceans and soils through bombarding them with nitrogens and chemicals. The result is not so much a problem for the planet (it’s been through worse, actually), but for the species that live on it, including the current dominant species – Homo Sapiens.  That is us, humanity. The question should really be: How can I save Humanity?  It’s unethical, in my view, to say: let’s not save humanity in favour of whatever new nature will evolve after our demise. It’s unethical towards those that are born into this world who can no longer make that choice after we let go of our responsibility to protect ourselves by taking care of our home which feeds us, provides us with shelter, and keeps us comfortable.  So how can I save Humanity? This is a great question, and if you have arrived on this website you will find an important part of the answer in the pages that fill it. People from around the world are gathering at Ecosystem Restoration Camps to repair what humanity has broken already, or is breaking. The  Mighty Movement we are shaping here is actively restoring degraded ecosystems (the web of life that must not break if we want to save Humanity), and introducing ways to live in healthy and abundant ecosystems that can last. We do this, because rich ecosystems were the reason we are able to exist in the first place at all. We emerged because the ecosystem was made up of a diverse range of species, the climate was relatively stable, and the levels of pollution were non-existent.  We still can see that wealth in abundant coral reefs, noisy and thick rainforests, the wonderful variety of and enormous natural herds  in the savannahs or in the number of insects in a flowery meadow. What we have, however, done is turn these rich systems into deserts by removing all that is natural and turning them into vast deserts of just one species (soy, grain, rice, cattle). That seemed smart at the time, until we figured out that we are inextricably linked to an abundant and diverse ecosystem. We only figured that out recently. We also figured out recently that our ecosystem is on the verge of collapse, maybe even within decades. So if we want to save humanity, let’s work hard and fast to have our planetary ecosystem become diverse again. Let’s return abundance and biodiversity! Let’s remove the deserts we created (some over thousands of years) and replace them with rich natural areas, and diverse agricultural enterprises worldwide. If we do this now, we can survive and live very well even with all the billions of us that are alive today and will be alive in the future. Yes, if we repair our planet – which we can do – we will be very well off. There will be plenty for us to eat and use in our economies. Major challenges still exist as our economy will in time have to be bio-based. But we’ll figure that out. Let’s first give ourselves the hundreds of years of innovation we need to figure out how to still build phones, cars and houses only using bio-based materials. If we don’t repair our damaged ecosystems now, those hundreds of years will not be ours to use!  So how do you, one small individual, do that? - ['Our Time on Earth' - art exhibition reflection ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/74531-barbican-centre-exhibit-our-time-on) by Gaia Education (Sep 5, 2022): Learning about 'Our Time on Earth exhibit' at Barbican Centre brought freshness to my experience and a little bit of faith that things can still go well for life on our Planet. - [Ecosystem Restoration Summit 2022](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/74284-ecosystem-restoration-summit-2022) by Gaia Education (Aug 25, 2022) - [Youth Action and wellbeing ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/74190-youth-action-and-wellbeing) by Gaia Education (Aug 20, 2022): Lately Gaia Education as an organisation has been putting more focus into youth and offering sustainability education for young people. We believe this is where a massive change can happen as most young people will have to live in a world with continuously worsening climate crises. Bringing the 4 dimensional framework and curriculum to universities, schools and different youth initiatives can have a huge impact in the participants nature connection, worldview and helping them join or start their own projects or existing activist groups.  At the moment we are working on bringing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) into African universities as a MOOC (A massive open online course) as well as integrating the SDG Multipliers workshops and flashcards into Scottish universities. We are also thrilled to be part of two youth projects at the moment; Youth in Transition and Youth Action and wellbeing, both funded by Erasmus+.  Youth Action and wellbeing in partnership with UNESCO-ECO, Youth4Smile, Resilience Earth, Forest Bathing Ireland and Slovakian youth parliament, focuses on giving young people the tools to explore their eco-activism and a using a concrete framework and tips how they can actually change things in their area.  The project is based on a series of four workshops that are largely based on using nature based exercises and having a different theme in each workshop, like exploring what the participant is passionate about (could be any sustainability issue in the areas of social, ecological, economic and worldview), how to create or find a community or group interested in the same cause, mobilising action and how to have a say in local decision-making and amplifying the voice of youth which is vital in making decisions about climate related policies.  So far one week workshops have been ran in Ireland and Slovakia with Latvia following soon in October 22' and Spain in January 2023. All the participants have been between the ages of 15-20 from the before mentioned countries and a few of the participants are also returning to each training.  Based on the activities used in these workshops and feedback, an open source toolkit is going to be put together that any youth leader, teacher, young person etc. can download and get input on mobilising action, activities that can be used with young people, introductions to different frameworks and exercises, other useful resources and much more.  Another outcome is also a Pedagogical guide for people working in academia who are interested in the pedagogical tools used during the project and exploring alternative pedagogies like systems thinking, nature or adventure based learning. We will also be sharing a series of case studies.  Are you working with young people? Do you think the toolkit is something that would be useful to you?  Comment below! - [Learn about the 4 dimensional framework in the Foundation for Intentional community webinar](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/73619-fic-webinar) by Gaia Education (Jul 28, 2022): The purpose of Foundation for Intentional Community is bring communities around the world together into a hub to share knowledge, resources and connect with each other to build a movement.  The Foundation for Intentional Community (FIC) has over 35 years of partnership with hundreds of intentional communities around the world. At a time when people are desperate for more social connection and answers to complex problems, intentional communities offer hope in an increasingly broken world.  Through community we transform: Loneliness into belonging and meaning, Economic inequality into cooperative economy, Climate crisis into sustainable ecological design One of the leading frameworks that are used in all Gaia Education courses is the 4 dimensional tool which looks at sustainability holistically through the lens of social issues, ecological factors, the impact of personal and collective worldview and economic component and how they are all interlinked.  You now have the opportunity to learn about the 4-D framework with Giovanni Ciarlo, who has a long background in starting up an ecovillage in Mexico. He will share how he uses the 4 dimensional framework to overcome conflicts and issues as well as how it can help anyone in any setting who is wanting to start a community or bring a group together. He will also guide you how you can facilitate conversations in your community about holistic sustainability, embracing a whole systems approach. During this session you will learn: What is the four dimensional framework How the four aspects – – social. ecological, economic and worldview – are interlinked Examples of how the framework can be used in practise, and to facilitate conversations in your community How a whole systems approach can be applied to any setting: urban, rural, suburban, ecovillage etc. This also acts as an introduction into the Gaia Education Design for Sustainability course.  - [How do we cool our cities as temperatures sore & heatwaves increase? ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/73185-restoring-urban-ecosystems-erd) by Gaia Education (Jul 26, 2022): Learn how regenerating your plot of urban land the Gaian way can help cool city temperatures, promote biodiversity and improve wildlife habitat. - [Heading Towards Regenerative Futures ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/73527-heading-towards-regenerative-futures) by Gaia Education (Jul 21, 2022): Meet Jane Rasbash an integral pillar in the Gaia Education movement. What is transformative learning? ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/73095-what-is-sustainable-education-what-is) by Gaia Education (Jul 13, 2022): In the description of many of the Gaia Education courses, you'll come across phrases like; "creating a sustainable learning model" and "helping you build a regenerative life". But what do these terms and phrases mean? The world of sustainability is no stranger to buzzwords and trends, but how can you identify authenticity from greenwashing phrases we so often see across society; in retail, supermarkets, and cosmetics branding.  Terms like 'paradigm shift', 'regenerative change', and 'transformative learning' are terms familiar to many people working in sustainability. Still, in this article, I want to dive deeper into what they mean and how we ensure that we deliver what we say.  All Gaia Education courses are based on our unique 4-dimensional framework, Which means that it looks at sustainability from a holistic perspective and systemic thinking (another buzzword! Bear with me…). Instead of thinking that sustainability is just the environment or the ecological aspect of life, the 4-dimensional framework gets you to look at social, economic and worldview areas. This model can be applied to a society, an individual, a community, a business, anything! If a community struggles with multiple social issues like gender imbalance and access to education, environmental issues will not be at the top of people's minds. We need to develop many areas before becoming a community or a society that is net-zero or even regenerative. Systemic thinking refers to this; everything is interconnected. The way that your children are taught in school is connected to our environmental laws, a country's refugee laws impact climate change and vice versa (read about climate refugees), and how empathetic our immediate social support system is affecting our attitude towards climate change contributes to a piece of the culture as a whole etc.  Gaia Education's purpose is to shift the world's current dominating view that everything is separate from each other - that we are not interconnected. We help students see how we're all part of nature and show them what that means - we uncover how this impacts how we show up in the world and how we inhabit it.  - [Nature is a Human Right! ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/73096-nature-is-a-human-right) by Gaia Education (Jul 13, 2022): "Green space is vital to our welfare - But millions are being deprived of it." The day will be divided into 3 parts, and you are welcome to come to all three parts or to select which ones you wish to attend. - [What About the Climate Refugees? ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/72041-the-story-of-climate-refugees) by Gaia Education (Jun 20, 2022): Today marks World Refugee Day - every year on June 20th, the world celebrates bringing awareness to the plight, lives & human stories of global refugees -2022 see's the focus on the right to seek safety. There are many reasons communities & people become displaced; war, violence, religious, national, social, racial, political persecution, gender/sexual orientation, hunger and climate change. "But officially, climate change is not yet a valid reason for an asylum claim. In 2013, the first climate change refugee asylum case was shot down by the New Zealand High Court when a Kiribati man attempted to claim that status by law.  But as man-made climate change worsens, and oceans rise, the 1951 and 1967 conventions may need to expand their scope"(Global citizen.)  Whoever.  Wherever.  Whenever.  Everyone has the right to seek safety.   According to the UNHCR, more than 115 000 people reached Europe through the Mediterranean Sea in 2021. Since 2014 more than 23 000 people have lost their lives trying to get to Europe; as cruel as this number is, this reflects only the recorded deaths; many others disappeared without any NGOs or authority registered. The European political class quickly characterised and distinguished these people as refugees and "economic migrants''. Now we have two distinct groups in the eyes of the European States: those entitled to international protection and those that should be repatriated. It's not my goal to write about the political repercussions of international law or the morality behind the international protection of individuals looking for a safe haven.    Gaia Education educates people that real change starts with us and that it's in our hands to create the necessary regeneration of our planet. The UN Refugees Agency published in October 2015 a report titled 'UNHCR, the Environment & Climate Change', which predicted the significant number of refugees as a result of Climate Change. Although at the time recognised that it was challenging to relate Climate Change to the causes of displacement, UNHCR was able to show a relation between the drought in Somalia and the conflict that forced people to flee to Kenya. Today, we know that global warming is affecting countries around the equator severely.  The North American organisation Climate Refugees has been publishing numerous reports and case studies about the impact of global warming on the populations and communities worldwide, especially those more dependent on small-scale agriculture, farming and fisheries. Since 2018 the World Bank has warned that in 2050 more than 140 million people will be displaced due to climate change. The same report's last edition already states that there're already says that they're 216 million displaced people. We still are far away from 2050, but the borders of the European Union already reflect the drastic future ahead of us.  - [Gaia Education at the Luxembourg Peace Prize awards - Ceremony ](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/72584-gaia-education-received-the-luxembourg) by Gaia Education (Jun 17, 2022): A big day for our community as founder Ross Jackson accepts a peace award and presents the history of Gaia Education! - [Gaia Education awarded prestigious Luxembourg Peace Prize for global education efforts in sustainability & regeneration](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/72573-gaia-education-awarded-prestigious) by Gaia Education (Jun 16, 2022): Ross Jackson, Copenhagen-based convenor of Gaia Education and Co-Chief Executive Pedro Pedrosa will be in Luxembourg, Brussels Friday June 17th to accept the award. - [Gaia Education is hiring! - Part-time, Self-employed Communications Coordinator in Spanish and Portuguese](https://www.gaiaeducation.org/blog/72451-gaia-education-is-hiring-part-time-self) by Gaia Education (Jun 9, 2022): Gaia Education is hiring! This week, we bring you a story full of inspiration, shedding a spotlight on a children-focused learning centre in Barcelona, Spain, 'The Chestnut Tree'. The project is based on Gaia guidelines providing meaningful opportunities for healthy development - at its heart, it's a sustainable, ecological program that supports environmental projects and the strengthening of communities. Values like responsibility, caring, respect and trust are the basis of the program.
