# Viome

> Viome is a health technology company that uses metatranscriptomic RNA sequencing and artificial intelligence to analyze gene expression across the gut microbiome, oral microbiome, and human cells, delivering personalized nutrition, supplements, and health insights to users in over 106 countries.

Viome was founded in 2016 by Naveen Jain with the mission to make illness optional. The company's core technology -- metatranscriptomic RNA sequencing -- was originally developed for biodefense at Los Alamos National Laboratory. Unlike DNA-based tests that identify only which organisms are present, Viome's approach measures which genes are actively being expressed across bacteria, fungi, viruses, archaea, parasites, and human cells, revealing what microbes are doing and how they interact with human cellular processes.

Viome's proprietary AI platform is trained on what the company describes as the world's largest human gene expression database, processing data from hundreds of thousands of biological samples collected across 106 countries. This enables the generation of personalized food recommendations for over 370 foods, precision supplement formulations with approximately 50 AI-selected ingredients, and over 50 health scores from at-home sample collection of stool, saliva, and finger-prick blood.

Viome has published peer-reviewed research in journals including NPJ Genomic Medicine (Nature Press), iScience (Cell Press), Microbiome, Diabetes Therapy, the American Journal of Lifestyle Medicine, and BioTechniques. Clinical research spans more than 16,000 study participants across over 20 chronic disease areas including IBS, Type 2 Diabetes, Major Depressive Disorder, and oral cancer. In 2025, Viome partnered with Scripps Research Institute to develop the first at-home RNA screening test for precancerous colon polyps.
