- [Q&A – Simon Michlmayr](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/annual-general-meeting-2022-2): We chat to Simon Michlmayr of S. Michlmayr & Co clock and watchmakers…
- [ONLY WATCH 2021: Clocks Chime In](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/only-watch-2021-clocks-chime-in): There is a new addition for ONLY WATCH 2021 – clocks. The biennial charity auction, established to raise funds for research into Duchenne muscular dystrophy, has just announced its horological collection for its next event, on 6 November 2021 in Geneva, and these include the three clocks profiled here, among them the Patek Philippe Complicated Desk Clock, which was made specifically for ONLY WATCH. Some 54 participating watch brands and related collaborations will be involved in this year’s auction, which is conducted by Christie’s on behalf of ONLY WATCH. To date, more than €70 million (£60 million) has been raised for the cause.
- [Lewis Walduck](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/lewis-walduck): When a child’s first words are ‘tick tock’, it’s a sign of a budding horologist – and that’s certainly been the case for 17-year-old Lewis Walduck, one of the BHI’s newest, and youngest, members and Distance Learning Course students.
- [Daniels ‘Millennium’ Watch Breaks Records](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/daniels-millennium-watch-breaks-records): A new world auction record for a British-made wristwatch was set when a Millennium watch by Dr George Daniels CBE FBHI sold for £519,000 (including buyer’s premium).
- [Welcome Back!](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/welcome-back): It’s been a long time, but we are delighted to say that we have been welcoming horology students back to Upton Hall again and our watchmaking and clockmaking courses are back on.
- [Rare Roger W Smith Watch Sells at Geneva Auction   ](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/rare-roger-w-smith-watch-sells-at-geneva-auction): A wristwatch made by one of Britain’s foremost contemporary independent watchmakers Roger W Smith OBE FBHI, has sold at auction for Swiss CHF 541,800 (approximately £423,916) including buyer’s premium.
- [Vintage Cartier Breaks Record for Fellows](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/vintage-cartier-breaks-record-for-fellows): A vintage Cartier Tonneau wristwatch from circa 1914, which originally belonged to a British Captain who served on the Western Front in the First World War, has fetched the highest price ever for a Cartier watch sold by Fellows Auctioneers. The 107-year-old watch went for £15,312 (including buyers' premium) at the auction house's Luxury Watch Sale on 15 February 2021 - far exceeding its estimate of £6,000–£8,000.
- [Tompion Clock: £262,750 at Bonhams](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/tompion-clock-262750-at-bonhams): With excellent provenance and by the workshop of Thomas Tompion, a rare, early eighteenth-century gilt metal-mounted, ebony-veneered, quarter-repeating, and striking table clock sold at auction for £262,750. The clock, which had been estimated at between £120,000 and £180,000 was sold by Bonhams at its Fine Clocks auction held in London on Wednesday 16 December 2020.
- [A Winter Warming Crowdfunder](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/a-winter-warming-crowdfunder): Many of you will have read in an earlier blog post that the ageing heating system at Upton Hall has finally succumbed to old Father Time, and has broken down to a state of disrepair. Its final act was to spray hot water around the cellar before going to sleep for good. Well and truly kaput!
- [$2.2 Million Vintage Heuer Monaco](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/2-2-million-vintage-heuer-monaco): Once again, the combination of an iconic vintage steel sports 1960-70s chronograph, a legendary movie star and motorsports has proved to be a winner. On Saturday 12 December, Phillips in Association with Bacs & Russo, at its New York ‘RACING PULSE’ auction, sold a Heuer Monaco, reference 1133, for a world record price of US $2,208,000 (£1,635,000), including premium.
- [In the Bleak Midwinter…We’re Still Here!](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/in-the-bleak-midwinter-were-still-here): Those of you who have visited Upton Hall, especially in the winter months, will be well aware that even in a normal year, coming inside is akin to reaching the Polar Ice Cap. Temperatures are often lower than those outside. Well, this year we have a special treat in store for anyone brave enough to step through the big wooden doors. After years and years of sticky tape and string holding the antiquated heating system together, the rather large boiler in the cellar finally cracked its shell, leaving it irreparable. Replacement costs of a startling £50,000 upwards are being muttered!! Yes, it’s a big place to heat.
- [Clocks and Watches](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/clocks-and-watches): That’s it, the last HJ of 2020 has gone to press. Meaning that….we’ve already been working on the next two issues. Production schedules are always tighter at this time of year, as the bank holidays mean we need to bring everything forward. However, we still have a December issue bursting with analysis of the watch market, clock mechanisms and vintage horological pictures.
- [Upton Hall: Refurbished and Ready](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/upton-hall-refurbished-and-ready): It is such a shame that our members and guests have not been able to enjoy visiting Upton Hall this year.
- [Back On Course](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/back-on-course): Time, or the measuring of it, is our trade – and goodness, have we been counting it since March, when our on-site short watchmaking and clockmaking courses were suspended and later our exams, as a result of the pandemic. (The distance learning course was and still is available, though, and we were heartened by how many people took it up. Watchmaking and clockmaking: the perfect lockdown activities!) Six months later and we finally have the great news we’ve been preparing for: as of next month, and assuming no changes in the rules, we will be restarting our courses.
- [All Together Now (Mostly)](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/all-together-now-mostly): Something I love to see as an editor: a thriving Letters page. We’ve had a lot of letters coming in lately; in fact, the September issue saw me finally able to clear a backlog I’d had going for a while, and no sooner had we gone to print than more came in. Requests for information (I’m sure our knowledgeable member base can help out), discussions on horological theory and an offer from someone who has 159 issues of the Horological Journal available for gifting, from January 1954 through to March 1968. (They belonged to his grandfather, and apparently his grandmother always referred to them as her husband’s ‘horror magazines’. The very idea!) I love hearing what our readers have to say and seeing discussions take place on the pages in front of me. It’s a key part of furthering knowledge and a sense of community. Horology does often involve many hours working alone, so it’s so good to see that people still want to engage with each other through the HJ, especially given the recent lockdown and the fact that social restrictions are likely to continue for quite some time.
- [Vulliamy Movements and Rosetta Stones](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/vulliamy-movements-and-rosetta-stones): Time was when the graphic designer Sam Law-Bartle and I would work side-by-side in the same office for several days a week to get the Horological Journal to print every month. Of course, since lockdown began, we’ve both been working from home. The distance between us has gone from about two feet to 60 miles. (From next week, it’ll be even greater. 62 miles, maybe even 62.5. I’m moving house. We should still be ok.) It was strange at first, but we’re well connected, have all the benefits of technology such as Zoom and, of course, we’re both determined to keep the HJ going every month as it has done since 1858. It’s been maintained in the past under far harder conditions, without all the technological benefits we enjoy, so we are trucking on.
- [We’re Still Here](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/7997-2): It is of course impossible to avoid the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and here at the BHI we are still working remotely to get the Horological Journal to print each month (which is a pleasure to do). Watch lovers will surely know by now that the Baselworld watch fair has been cancelled for 2021 and the current branding dropped. COVID-19 certainly played a role in this, but the story is more complex than that, as can be seen in this issue’s analysis of the situation by industry expert Martin Foster.
- [Want to Make a Watch?](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/want-to-make-a-watch): ‘Brilliant.’ ‘Fantastic.’ ‘A pleasure.’ That’s what some of our newest students had to say when they were the first to go on our new Build Your Own Watch course.
- [Examinations Update](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/examinations-update): As the COVID-19 pandemic continues, we have a message to our students who are looking to take their exams. We know that you're eager to take these steps to become part of the clock and watch profession, and how hard you have worked to get to this level.
- [COVID-19 and the BHI](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/covid-19-and-the-bhi): For over 160 years, the British Horological Institute (BHI), dedicated to the art and science of measuring time, has seen many changes and events. We share our headquarters with the Museum of Timekeeping (MoT), meaning we have everything on site from antique longcase clocks to modern quartz watches, and even the original Speaking Clock. Like everyone else the acknowledgement that this particular time is unprecedented in living memory, is unsettling to say the least.
- [International Women’s Day: Women in Horology](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/international-womens-day-women-in-horology): If watchmaking and clockmaking are niche skills that deserve more recognition, the role of women in the industries is possibly even more underrated. On International Women’s Day, let’s look at women’s historic and ongoing roles in horology.
- [Watchmaking and Clockmaking Careers](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/watchmaking-and-clockmaking-careers): Did you check the time at all today? Yes, thought so. Look at the date as well and you might also see that it’s National Careers Week. So let’s talk about clockmaking and watchmaking as professions.
- [The New Watch Gallery](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/the-new-watch-gallery): There’s probably no better way to learn about marine chronometers than to go to sea. If that’s not really an option, though, you could always take the tiller in the upcoming new Watch Gallery in the Museum of Timekeeping here at Upton Hall in Newark.
- [EAL/BHI Exam Application Deadline: Friday 17 January](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/eal-bhi-exam-application-deadline-friday-17-january): As a student of the BHI’s distance learning horological course, you can, of course, study in your own time and take as long as you need to complete the work. You can also choose whether or not you would like to take the associated exams to gain accreditation and MBHI or FBHI status.
- [A Watchful Eye](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/a-watchful-eye): The Watchmakers Club meets in London today for the second of its 2019 events (it meets biannually, giving watch lovers a chance to view some exquisite creations, showcased by their makers). If you couldn’t make it, though, you can still read up on what’s happening in the industry right now and what there might be for you in 2020.
- [BHI Awards Day](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/bhi-awards-day): It’s that time of year again: the BHI Awards Day at Upton Hall on Saturday 26 October. It’s always exciting to see how students of our clock and watchmaking courses have done, and Awards Day is our chance to recognise their hard work, achievements and, of course, contribution to the wider world of craft.
- [Dyslexia and Horology](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/dyslexia-and-horology): World Dyslexia Awareness Day (ahead of Dyslexia Awareness Week, which starts on Monday) is the perfect time to talk about horology. Really, it is. One of the first things I noticed when I became Editor of the Horological Journal in 2018 was how many horologists appeared to have dyslexia. (And, of course, how many of them also had the same experiences of having been so very wrongly written off as intellectually lacking as a result, in school and elsewhere.) I’ve been wondering since then if there could be a connection and, well, it seems likely.
- [BHI Exam Results](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/bhi-exam-results): Once again, it’s a pleasure to see a very respectable number of successful candidates in this year’s BHI examinations. Very well done to all of them. It is most encouraging to see improvements year on year and 2019 is no exception. Generally, there was an overall improvement and for the first time in my role as Chief Examiner, a 100% mark was awarded.
- [Producing the Horological Journal](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/producing-the-horological-journal): We’ve just gone to press for the October issue of the Horological Journal (HJ), meaning we have a bit of breathing space as we move on to November’s. This seems like a good time to give a little more information about the monthly production process for the longest continuously-running technical journal in the UK and possibly the world. We’ve not missed a month since September 1858 and we don’t intend to start now.
- [Dragon Boating](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/dragon-boating): So, next weekend, the BHI will compete in the Newark Dragon Boat Race to raise money for Beaumond House Community Hospice and the Children’s Bereavement Centre. I will be participating, by which I mean volunteering my husband. (It’s the best contribution I can offer, seriously. You don’t want me on your boating team. I can’t even ride a bike.)
- [Time Rules Us All](https://bhi.co.uk/blog/time-rules-us-all): Time rules us all. We run our lives by it, remind ourselves constantly about its passing (carpe diem! Tempus fugit!) and never seem to have enough of it. Stories about travelling through it are classic and concepts such as relativity remind us that actually, we don’t even really know what it is. Yet horology – the actual craft and science of timepieces – remains a niche trade in the UK today, with  few practitioners.

- [Mainspring Winder Sizes](https://bhi.co.uk/mainspring-winder-sizes): Mainspring data now available. The mainspring winder is a crucial tool for the watchmaker, yet it’s typically unobtainable at the sort of price that beginner watchmakers might want to spend. How do the new Chinese mainspring winders compare with the Swiss sets by Bergeon, and which of the Bergeon ones offer the best combination of useful sizes?

- [BHI Branches](https://bhi.co.uk/about-us/bhibranches): The first BHI branch was established in Manchester shortly after the Second World War. It was an initiative that was quickly replicated up and down the country. More recently we have even begun to see BHI branches established overseas.
- [What is the Horological Journal?](https://bhi.co.uk/hj): The Horological Journal (HJ) contains leading, peer-reviewed articles on historical and contemporary clock and watchmaking, servicing, repair, restoration and conservation. We aim to maintain a good balance of theory and practice, covering clocks, watches, turret clocks, and electric and electronic timepieces. Although technical in nature, these articles and the news we bring from the industry are also of interest for collectors and other horology enthusiasts.

- [Diplomas](https://bhi.co.uk/diplomas): The BHI offers three vocational qualifications for the UK’s clock and watchmakers. Our awarding body EAL is the UK’s leading industry specialist awarding organisation. EAL is part of Semta - the Science, Engineering, Manufacturing and Technologies Alliance - which is a not-for-profit organisation responsible for engineering skills for the future of the UK's most advanced sectors. All our qualifications are accredited by the UK’s regulatory qualifications body, Ofqual. They are:
- [Getting Started](https://bhi.co.uk/getting-started): Our short courses take place in Upton Hall in Nottinghamshire, in workshops with professional tools, machines and equipment. This is also the home of an unrivalled collection of historical and modern clocks and watches, a horological library and valuable archives. You can book overnight accommodation on site and have breakfast and lunch in the Clock House Café. Distance learning students can benefit from these courses and facilities; they are ideal to practise your skills. Whether you choose a short course or distance learning, you always benefit from the knowledge and experience of the BHI tutors. You work directly with an expert in the field and get personal attention as well as useful tips.
- [History of Upton Hall](https://bhi.co.uk/about-us/upton): We know very little about the early history of Upton Hall. Available records show that in 1335 Robert Bagenham had a home here. It stood on land that King Edwy had donated to Archbishop Oscytel of York in 956, one hundred and ten years before the Norman Conquest. By 1620 Owen Oglethorpe lived in Upton Hall, but he died in nearby Blidworth at a time when the plague hit Upton village. Martin Oglethorpe, probably related to Owen, is mentioned as Squire in about 1645, at the time of the Civil War. Later ownership of the land changed hands – by 1795 it was owned by Robert Smith, the later Lord Carrington. A small part of Oglethorpe’s Hall, which dates back to the time of Elizabeth I, still remains in the present structure.
- [History of the BHI](https://bhi.co.uk/about-us/historyofthebhi): In the mid nineteenth century, Britain seemed truly to have been blessed among the nations. To the explosion of creative energy and entrepreneurship released by the industrial revolution was added the great wealth of an expanding empire. But while the empire grew, the industrial dominance of Britain was faltering, a fact revealed at the Great Exhibition in Hyde Park during the summer of 1851.
- [The BHI Today](https://bhi.co.uk/about-us/bhitoday): Thousands of people make, repair, conserve, restore, collect and sell clocks and watches, while millions more have an interest in the art and science of horology.

- [The BHI Barrett Silver Medal](https://bhi.co.uk/about-us/ouafsiugaf): In 1872 the Turner’s Company in London offered to sponsor an annual award for BHI students. The ‘Turner’ Silver Medal, as it became known, was first awarded for ‘horological turning in metal’ and later for ‘excellence in mechanical drawing’  but awards were temporarily suspended in 1914, for the duration of the First World War, and again in 1940 for the duration of the Second World War. Thereafter, the award seems to have been forgotten. Certainly by the mid-1980s it had become a distant memory and its principal purpose, as an award for students, had been usurped by the BHI Bronze Medal.

The current rope has been spliced with an 'agricultural' splice which jams in the going pulley cheeks. I have tried in the past to successfully splice these ropes but fail miserably. Also, the wheel trains, particularly the escape wheel is covered in shredded rope detritus so the customer has requested the upgrade to chain. I have seen in Cousins the various kits but unsure which to purchase to send to any willing repairer to include both pulleys of course. Please can anyone assist me?

- [Parts removed from balance staff jewels](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/parts-removed-from-balance-staff-jewels): I'm servicing a carriage clock. I've found that the upper and lower jewels for the balance staff seem to have bits cut out of them. (See pictures). I'd be interested if anyone can tell me what function this serves. In addition, the platform is steel with an incabloc spring engraved into it, even though there is no shock absorption in the escapement. All a bit of a mystery so grateful for any enlightenment.
- [Clearance in an Enfield Movement](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/clearance-in-an-enfield-movement): I have recently serviced a movement which I believe to be made by the Enfield Clock Company; in many ways similar to a Smiths Enfield item.
- [Problem feeding drive line onto winding barrel](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/problem-feeding-drive-line-onto-winding-barrel): I am having difficulty with a long case clock drive line not feeding neatly on to the barrel from a fully wound down state. The barrel is not perfectly horizontal so, when starting to wind, the first coil feeds on to the barrel the "wrong" side of the hole from which the line emerges out of its terminal inside the barrel. Thereafter the line will bunch and malfunction.
- [Complicated Nicole, Nielsen Watch Overhaul](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/complicated-nicole-nielsen-watch-overhaul): I have recently acquired a hunting cased minute-repeating split seconds chronograph with perpetual calendar and moon phases by Nicole, Nielsen & Co. I would appreciate a recommendation for a qualified restorer of same. The watch appears in working order, but needs service. Thank you kindly in advance for any recommendations.
- [French farmhouse clock striking twice](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/french-farmhouse-clock-striking-twice): I am servicing a ‘French farmhouse clock’ for the first time.(See the picture – some of the strike side wheels have been removed for clarity) It has rack striking which is activated by the forked piece in the second picture acting on the hoop wheel. It strikes the hours and half hours, but as far as I can tell has no run to warning. It runs well, but after the first arm of the fork actuates the hours, a few minutes later the second arm does the same thing – i.e. it strikes the hours twice. I have been unable to find a way to stop this and am starting to wonder if this is intentional. If anyone has any experience of these clocks I would appreciate your wisdom.

- [Double Fusee Movement](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/double-fusee-movement): Good evening. I am looking for a double fusee movement for a bracket clock. Center of winding hole to center of other winding hole is approximately 59mm. 30mm from the center of the central hole to the center of a winding hole. 2.8mm from the center of the central hole to the center of a winding hole, measured vertically. I probably have a little wiggle room. I'm in the US. Thanks very much.

(https://search.savills.com/property-detail/gb0401s237604 if you want to look at the details) Frankly this is not before time. No matter how loved it may be, it has been a white elephant ever since we were left it. The big question is - where will the HQ go to, and have the directors made any decision on even what area to start looking? A major consideration is whether we keep the Museum of Timekeeping under the same roof, or will that be separately housed - and if so, how long will it stay intact before the Trust runs out of money and it has to be sold off? Views and opinions welcomed (especially contrary ones!) Andrew

- [Cartier/ Concord wrist watch dilemma !?](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/cartier-concord-wrist-watch-dilemma): Hello everyone. This is my first post here. There is a bit of a dilemma about a vintage 1970's marked Cartier on the dial watch, fitted to a Concord movement in a Concord case. Could this watch be authentic Cartier? Did Concord made watches for Cartier in the 70's ?
- [Cleaning brass(maybe lacquered?)](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/cleaning-brassmaybe-lacquered): I am repairing a Chinese cloisonné clock. The movement is OK, but much of the casing and parts of the finials are severely tarnished. You can see the black areas around the edges in the picture. This is not something that can be removed by Brasso or some such. Can someone advise how to deal with this please? Roger.
- [Wheel and Pinion Cutting: choice of cutters for new work](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/wheel-and-pinion-cutting-choice-of-cutters-for-new-work): I am making my own lantern clock (for those that know me, yes.. still the same one!). Previously I have only cut wheels and pinions to match antique work, where advice has always been to use a pinion cutter 0.1 module smaller than the wheel, both to provide strength and to accomodate the thinner wheel teeth of antique work. However, this clock is a 1970s design with a 1.0 Module going train and 0.9 module strike train. I have some original drawings and an original 1970s clock to copy. The going train of my clock is up and running at last, but there have been some surpises along the way. Can anyone with experience of designing and cutting their own wheel trains explain the logic of this design: The going train is 1.0 Module, but the 8 leaf second pinion has been cut with an M1.0-6 cutter and the 6 leaf third pinion with a an M0.9- cutter. The strike train is 0.9 Module, but all three 6 leaf pinions have been cut with an M0.8-6 cutter. To my mind, using a smaller module cutter (i.e. thicker leaves) for the pinions, with standard thickness wheel teeth is just asking for trouble. Can anyone suggest a logic for thsi design?

- [Andrews](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/andrews): I have got a miniature lantern clock with an alarm which is some 20cm high. The only identity mark is a spurious signature of Joseph Knibb. - [Associate Member](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/associate-member-3): I have an 8 day Westminster chime clock movement, marked Foreign, probably of German origin from a Grandmother clock which is of sentimental value. Sadly the chime click spring failed under power the shock of the sudden power release sheared the front pivot on the 2nd wheel. Miraculously the teeth on both the chime barrel and 2nd wheel and its pinions look intact, but I'd need to confirm that. The three ratchet wheels all look quite worn and the two remaining click springs I wouldn't now trust. One is clearly a replacement at some time. The three ratchet pawls look worn but 2 x may be OK. I have informed the customer any repairs would be very costly and certainly not cost effective but I have been asked to try and find someone willing to undertake to fabricate, 3 x ratchet wheels, 3 x click springs and re-pivot the 2nd wheel and an approximate cost. An unlikely request I realize but I did say I'd inquire. Can anyone assist please?

- [SUITABLE MOVEMENT TO REPLICATE](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/suitable-movement-to-replicate): I would like advice on a suitable movement to replicate that has wheels and pinions which can be cut using cutters available from Thorton. I had started with Seagull 36 and had replicated many of the parts but for many of the pinions cutters were not available. i would like to replicate the complete movement and having the original movement as a testbed seems to be a good idea.
- [MICROSCOPE ORION S420.](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/microscope-orion-s420): For anyone interested, I bought one of these for £15 a few years ago and wouldn't be without it for watch work- oiling, checking escapement actions and general inspection. This one's on E Bay, No. 314300597227. They come up quite often. Please note: No individual eyepiece focussing, the tubes are vertical... I use an 'Up and down' chair... and no built in light. The x20 image is very good with a long working distance.I believe these were issued to OU students some years ago. I have no personal knowledge of this particular instrument or its seller but well worth buying if in good nick.
- [Dial Silvering](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/dial-silvering): I have re-silvered a number of dials in the past and found that the only effective way to remove the old silvering is by using emery cloth. This goes against all of the rules of conservation and I hasten to add that I have only used this method on my own clocks. There must be another way to remove the old silvering without resorting to emery cloth. Can anyone enlighten me?
- [Division Master](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/division-master): A friend has been using the division master for a number of years and is now experiencing problems with the accuracy of the divisions. The last tooth is either too thick or too thin. The set up consists of the controller (division master), stepper motor and rotary table. The problem can be in any of these items, but I suspect either the controller or stepper motor. The question is of course how do you go about fault finding with very little knowledge of electronics is order to isolate the faulty component? Does anyone have any experience with the division master or is able to offer some guidance regarding fault finding?
- [No friction in a friction joint](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/no-friction-in-a-friction-joint): I am having a look at a pretty standard Mappin and Webb clock -essentially a round carriage clock with a cylinder escapement in a Napoleon hat case. The problem seems to be that there is no friction in the the friction joint in the centre arbor, even with the circlip firmly in place. Is there any sensible way of increasing the friction in this joint? As an aside, what is a good amplitude for a cylinder escapement? Grateful for any suggestions.
- [Convex clock glass](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/convex-clock-glass): Can anyone please suggest a source for a convex glass (approx. 9 inch diameter) for an English dial clock? I want to find one with a greater height of doming that the usual modern ones - ideally about 7/8 inch.

It's quite interesting working on it but This one hasn't been treated very well. I know it's probably not worth fixing but it means a lot to the owner, so I'll get it going. What I wanted to know is if anyone has any idea where I can buy some little plastic dancing figures in the UK. I see them easily available across the pond but not this country. If I can't find any, I'll probably have to cast one using one of the existing ones and then hand paint it. Not really worth spending time on but.... I'd be grateful for any info. Thanks
- [Travis Thorne Long case](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/travis-thorne-long-case): Does anyone have any info. regarding a Travis Thorne long case please. I am trying to get something for the owners. I can find pictures on the internet of clocks by him in a similar style but no info regarding dates or places. This clock has a brass 12" dial with a 60% visible date ring with a star centre above the 6 o'clock, a similar sized seconds dial, again with 5 pointed star centre under the XII and a 29 1/2 moon dial (slightly larger) with a rotating penny moon in the centre in the break arch. I don't think it is the original case, currently mahogany. The makers name is in the chapter ring either side of the 30 under the 6 o' clock. The minutes are are marked with large numerals at 5 minute intervals. Any help is appreciated.

I think it best for me to acquire the equipment required and practice it's use. I know there are several ways this can be achieved, from having a dedicated wheel and pinion engine to using a lathe. I welcome advice on what solution is the easiest method and where I might obtain the said apparatus. Many thanks for any info.

- [Universal 218-9](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/universal-218-9): Hello, I have serviced a Universal cal. 218-9 mini rotor automatic watch. When manually wound it will keep going 30 hours or more. When worn it will only put up enough power to go about 3 hours. Mainspring lube and slipping grease is correct. The palls under mini rotor are fine and I have changed the double ratchet wheel that fits over the barrel arbour. I have checked the barrel arbour top and bottom for excessive wear in the barrel and for wear and too much end shake in the plates. Any suggestions would be very much appreciated. Alphie.
- [Longcase clock weights – maximums](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/longcase-clock-weights-maximums): I have a long case movement with an anchor escapement and five wheel train, going barrel 55mm dia. The plates are 3mm thick. All the wheel meshing is good and it will run freely with the anchor removed, pivots clean and oiled. At the moment it needs about 7Kgs weight to keep it going. What is a sensible maximum weight for a plain brass bearing.? Do I need to put in ball bearings on the barrel arbour?

- [Platform woes](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/platform-woes-3): In need of a little help, I currently have a winter Haller and Hof Meier Fusee time only movement with platform escapement. Now the platform isn’t the original, so firstly does anyone have one for sale, or a picture/measurements of an orginal. Secondary and also a major problem is the entry pallet jewel has been replaced with a piece of steel. I found the reason for this and it’s because the pallet jewel holder had been broken ( where the jewel sits sandwiched between the upper and lower bits the top bit had snapped and been soldered on with the new bit of steel for an entry pallet ). The picture shows the exit pallet jewel as it shows how it is sandwiched between the jaws of the pallet. The repair was reasonable but it lacked enough depth into the scape wheel teeth. So next ask, does anyone know of where to get clock pallet jewels all my suppliers just sell the Brocot style and not lever type. Any help greatly appreciated.

- [New-build English bracket clock suspension spring size?](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/new-build-english-bracket-clock-suspension-spring-size): Hello, I am an amateur workshop owner and occasional clock constructor. I am currently working on a twin fusee clock in the style of an English bracket clock, loosely based on the plans published by John Tyler many years ago. The plans don't detail the suspension spring. My clock has a 17cm length pendulum rod, from the top to the centre of the bob. Many antique bracket clocks of this type that I have inspected seem to have a disproportionately long suspension spring. What length and thickness of suspension spring would work best?

Are there any resources that are available to help me do that? In particular, I was wondering if there was any way to find out who the watch was issued to before it was sold as surplus after the war.
- [Platform Escapement Jewels](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/platform-escapement-jewels): I do so hope one of you lovely folk can help me. I have taken on a job of what I initially thought would be a simple service. It is a beautiful westminster chiming clock with a walnut veneer. The job went very well until I started on the escapment. This clock has a platform escapement to my surprise. I found the balance staff broken and rather than try to repair it, I turned another. On further inspection, I find one of the jewels broken also. Can I find jewels anywhere, can i hell... The jewel has a 1.5mm outer diameter with the pivot hole 0.2mm. Does anyone know where I could perhaps find an assortment to pick through? Cousins are most unhelpful and other searches have been quite difficult also. Many thanks in advance.
- [Fusee Clock Springs](https://bhi.co.uk/members-forum/fusee-clock-springs): I have recently had 2 fusee clocks in for repair. Both had modern springs fitted by an earlier repairer, presumably to replace broken original springs. I assume that these replacement springs were the same size as the original ones. The problem was that the modern springs were much stronger than the original ones..In one case this had caused the fusee chain to break and the other had distorted the spring barrel. After making the necessary repairs, I replaced the springs.with ones of less thickness and the clocks ran satisfactorily.. Has anyone else experienced this problem?

It was tested at the Royal Observatory in 1871/72 and Mercer's book, "Chronometer Makers of the World" lists it as having been purchased by the Admiralty. I am seeking information regarding which ships, if any, this chronometer was placed into service. Living in the United States limits my access to this information :-).

## Tutors
- [Ross Alcock FBHI](https://bhi.co.uk/tutors/ross-alcock-fbhi): As a professional horologist for nearly 20 years, I’ve had experience in most areas. I studied the BHI watch pathway for my examination at the School of Jewellery at Birmingham City University, as well as the conservation of clocks at West Dean, before embarking on a period of tower clock restoration and repair for Smith of Derby – all before finding my place in the horological industry as a self-employed domestic clock repairer. I’ve taken further courses in education and training to support and develop my interest in passing on the subject of horology to others, both through formal courses – such as those run by the BHI – and in the more informal setting of talks on the subject to interested groups. I’m a strong believer that the most important part of any learning journey is the foundations. Although these may seem boring and not as interesting as the more advanced aspects, they are the area on which everything else is built. Without a firm foundation and understanding of the basics it is not possible to grasp and develop the more in-depth, detailed areas of a subject. For this reason, you are most likely to find me in the clock workshop delivering the first steps in a personal horological journey, laying firm foundations upon which students can build and grow the most complex and nuanced skills and understanding that horology has to offer. - [Paul roberson FBHI](https://bhi.co.uk/tutors/paul-roberson-fbhi): At school I was always mechanically minded and very into Meccano and model trains. Originally I wanted to be a motorcycle mechanic, but I saw a watchmaking apprenticeship advertised at Fish Brothers, a jewellery chain in East London, so I took it on and stayed with them for more than 30 years. In the mid-1970s, when I was 16, I did the BHI training and exams at Hackney Technical College. Apprentices used to start on clocks before they could be trusted with watches. Watches are smaller, but clocks are quite chunky and more forgiving while you get the feel of things. After I left Fish Brothers, I was self-employed, but while I’m good with my hands, I’m rubbish as a business person. Then the job as Clockmaker at the Palace of Westminster came up. They needed someone who was within easy reach of the Parliament buildings and on call for the Great Clock of Westminster, Big Ben – well, that was me…It’s amazing to think that I started as an apprentice in a basement and went on to look after ‘Big Ben’. If you had told me at technical college that I would have such a privilege and honour, I would never have believed it.I took a number of famous people up the clock tower while I was there, including Stephen Fry, Hugh Laurie and Jools Holland, who’s a clock and watch enthusiast.I’m retired from my position at the Palace now, but I’m very active in the British Watch and Clock Makers Guild – I’m a Director – and, of course, a BHI tutor and Vice President of the Institute. It’s always nice to teach enthusiastic people. Sharing knowledge and passing on your skills is such a pleasure. If you’re mechanically minded then it’s usually just about being shown and guided – anyone can do it.
- [John Murphy FBHI](https://bhi.co.uk/tutors/john-murphy-fbhi): There have been quite a few moon phases since I first became interested in horology. It all started at 16 when I took up an apprenticeship with a family owned jewellers and watchmakers store in Northern Ireland. The owner was a professional member of the British Horological Institute
and keenly passed on his knowledge during the time I spent with him.I don’t think anyone simply makes the decision to become a watchmaker but, if they have the opportunity to observe someone repairing a watch, I am sure that, like me all those years ago, they will find it fascinating. To take a mechanism apart and put it back together again so it will operate correctly is highly rewarding, especially if the piece was not performing when it was initially seen.As a child I loved to build model kits and, as I got older, this was encouraged by my Dad. He showed me how to take apart anything that was mechanical, and put it back together again. He flew with the RAF and, like most service men of his era, liked to repair things, so I guess it runs in the family. After moving to England and taking my BHI examinations with the school at Manchester, I went on to study in Switzerland. I then worked in the industry, as watchmakers did in my day, for numerous watch houses. After that, I was asked to go in to teaching and eventually taught both the BHI and WOSTEP courses.I was later approached to tutor the short courses at the BHI’s headquarters in Upton Hall. This I enjoy immensely but it is a team effort and everyone involved at the BHI plays a huge part in making these courses successful.I get a real buzz out of teaching. I like passing on my knowledge to students and seeing them enjoy what I saw for the first time all those years ago: intricate mechanisms, some seeming to have a beating heart, which we use today to indicate time.Teaching is a vocation; I never once thought all those years ago that I would enjoy passing on my knowledge, like others were able to do for me. I have such a passion for education. We, as human beings, love to take up new information, meet new people and visit new places, especially if the subject area is of interest to us. If I could bottle the reward of passing on knowledge and sell the feeling of teaching, I would.
- [James welbourne FBHI](https://bhi.co.uk/tutors/james-welbourne-fbhi): I was always interested in how things worked and tried to take them apart to find out. I knew I had to put them together again so they would still work and that I had to do both.Watches did not arrive until I was 20 or so. I had a Waltham Traveller and the man in the shop said it was impossible to repair it. I decided this was not true and set out to mend it. Since I had taken things to pieces before, I was able to safely take it apart. I washed and reassembled it and the watch worked.Later, I lived in London and decided that Hackney College and the BHI course would organise my interest in horology and guide my interest and skill sets. I also lived near Portobello Road Market and became interested in the various types of pocket and wrist watches.I was lucky to find some kind people who leant me books and gave me watches to work on; theory and practice. I was able to attend WOSTEP as soon as I had finished at Hackney. Following my training I set out to earn my living by repairing watches. Much later I became involved with the open days at Upton Hall due to Mr Colin Houghton, a local watchmaker and friend. Once at the Hall you get asked if you can help… So could you run the platform course and what about a watch taster day? It took a while to get the idea but I enjoyed showing students how to work on watches. It is great to impart good practice and enthusiasm. I hope that I can entertain each student at an individual level and encourage them to think and solve problems and enjoy the work too.
- [Günter Dähndel FBHI](https://bhi.co.uk/tutors/joe-bloggs): As a watchmaker and specialist in the repair of antique and vintage pieces, my horological career has spanned nearly four decades.I trained in Scotland and Germany, and practised horology in Spain for a number of years, but am now based in the UK.Although a new face at the BHI, I have years of experience in teaching and mentoring students and am looking forward to my courses getting underway at Upton Hall. I think it’s hugely important to help bring on the next generation of horologists, and sharing my passion for watchmaking is something I really enjoy. After all, we were all students once upon a time and so it’s exciting to do my bit to help today’s trainee horologists.
