Coal plants accounted for less than 1 percent of UK electricity in June 2018, as a spell of cloudless days led to lots of solar power
- [Under pressure: coal economics overtaken by solar and wind](https://poweringpastcoal.org/insights/under-pressure-coal-economics-overtaken-by-solar-and-wind/) - Coal is the most important fuel in electricity generation today, accounting for 38% of global power production. Its use, however, is set to peak in 2027 and slide thereafter. The contribution of coal might drop to just 11% by 2050, as low-cost renewables, more flexible gas and cheap batteries push in and reshape the electricity
- [South Korea’s environmental ambition tackles the coal challenge](https://poweringpastcoal.org/insights/south-koreas-environmental-ambition-tackles-the-coal-challenge/) - By David Kang at Bloomberg NEF Coal generation has long served as a crucial component of South Korea’s economy by providing a cheap and reliable source of electricity to the country’s fast-growing manufacturing and service industries. As a result, the total capacity of coal-fired power plants has doubled to 37 gigawatts in the past two decades

But coal was responsible for 96 percent of electricity production in 1984. The subsequent decline of coal saw it fall from providing 83 percent of electricity in 1994 to 25 percent in 2015. Renewable energy increased from 5 percent to 65 percent over the same period, including a world record of 49 percent of electricity consumption from wind in 2015.

- [United Kingdom](https://poweringpastcoal.org/members/united-kingdom/) - In 2015 the UK was the first national government to announce a commitment to phase out unabated coal use, setting a target date of 2025. This leadership position reflects the history of coal use in the UK. Coal was an essential element of the UK’s industrial revolution in the 18th and 19th centuries. In January 1882 the UK was the first country to use coal to generate electricity, with a 93kW turbine at Holborn Viaduct in London, designed by Thomas Edison.

Last year, the government announced the country would move into a coal-free era of power production by the end of 2025, five years earlier than originally planned. Over the past decade, coal-fired electricity production has been reduced from 60% to 30%, making Israel one of the world leaders in coal phase-out efforts.

## Strands of Work

- [The Coal Transition Commission](https://poweringpastcoal.org/strands-of-work/coal-transition-commission/) - Our work with the Coal Transition Commission (CTC) is focused on finding ways to develop policy and financial solutions that can be delivered at scale to accelerate the transition from unabated coal power to clean energy, while keeping power reliable and affordable.
- [Private Finance](https://poweringpastcoal.org/strands-of-work/private-finance/) - The PPCA is facilitating cooperation among governments, business and the private finance sector to shift finance so that it supports a just transition away from coal, particularly in emerging economies.
- [Subnationals](https://poweringpastcoal.org/strands-of-work/subnationals/) - Subnational members commit to using all policy and regulatory levers under their authority to phase out unabated coal power in line with the PPCA Declaration.
- [Utilities and Grids](https://poweringpastcoal.org/strands-of-work/utilities-and-grids/) - Grid and Utility members are concerned about the provision of reliable and cost-effective power as the grid transitions to clean energy.
- [Energy Security](https://poweringpastcoal.org/strands-of-work/energy-security/) - The PPCA and its members affirm that clean energy - not coal - is the solution to the energy security crisis.
- [Just Transition](https://poweringpastcoal.org/strands-of-work/just-transition/) - In order to ensure a just transition away from coal and fossil fuels, which brings all regions and citizens on board and leaves no one behind, targeted policy measures and enabling conditions are needed.
