Posthaste: Canadians are unprepared to take that side hustle full-time

Posthaste’s report that nearly 25% of Canadians maintain a side hustle, and almost 50% of Gen‑Z business owners juggle a full‑time job with a side venture, underscores a rapid rise in micro‑enterprise activity online. For website owners, this surge translates into a higher volume of low‑margin, high‑frequency traffic from freelancers, marketplace sellers, and gig‑economy platforms that often rely on AI‑driven tools for content creation, customer support, and SEO automation. The influx can inflate page‑view counts, skew analytics, and increase the likelihood of automated scraping or “shadow‑bidding” bots that harvest product data or price‑compare services. Unchecked, these bots can degrade site performance, inflate server costs, and expose proprietary content to competitors. **Actionable steps:** 1. **Update your llms.txt file** to explicitly disallow known gig‑platform crawlers (e.g., “User‑Agent: SideHustleBot” → Disallow: /). This prevents unwanted indexing of product listings and pricing tables. 2. **Deploy bot‑detection middleware** that flags traffic patterns typical of AI‑assisted freelancers—short session durations combined with rapid form submissions—and route them to a CAPTCHA or rate‑limited API endpoint. 3. **Monitor referral sources** for spikes from gig‑economy sites (e.g., Fiverr, Upwork) and set up alerts in your analytics dashboard to distinguish genuine human visitors from automated agents, enabling timely adjustments to firewall rules or content throttling.
